Just seen the info you ahve been sent on Cheeseman, I am a descendant of the Thomas and Sarah mentioned, their line married into my Booker and Whiffen families which turns out to be quite a round robin.

Jane Dyke: Baptised, Kemsing, 18/12/1831. Married Richard Cheeseman 08/08/1852 at Sutton_at Hone. Died, 20/08/1897 at Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.

Daughter of John Dyke, Baptised Kemsing, 12/10/1806. Died between 1841 & 1851. Mother Anne, surname unknown , born in Ireland.

Parents of John Dyke: Aaron Dyke born circa 1769, place unknown. Mother Sarah Cheeseman, baptised at Otford 28/01/1776. Married Aaron Dyke, Kemsing, 13/11/1800. Buried, Kemsing, 06/02/1853.

Parents of Sarah Cheeseman: John Cheeseman married Sarah Twiner, Otford, 15/01/1767. John Died, Kemsing, 21/10/1827.

Richard Cheeseman was also a grandchild of Aaron Dyke and Sarah Cheeseman, via their son James, hence Jane and Richard were first cousins.

Jane and Richard were pioneering founders of the City of Victoria, Vancouver Island, BC. Lots more info but I need to dig it out.

Aaron and Sarah Dyke are my 3xgreat grandparents. Unfortunately for past 11 years Aaron's origins have remained a brick wall.

Thanks for that Bob. It fills in quite a few blanks. Richard and Jane are my gg grandparents and I had no background on them.

Glad you like it. Unfortunately, I made a mistake with Jane and  Richard's status as cousins. Aaron Dyke's wife had a brother called James who had a son also called James, who was Richard's father. Therefore Jane and Richard were second cousins both shared the same great grandparents; John and Sarah (nee Twiner) Cheeseman.

Will sort out some more info on Jane and Richard this weekend,mostly on their activities on Vancouver Island, sent to me by a US correspondent also a descendant of Sarah and Jane.

Also there were quite a few Whiffens and Bookers in the Kemsing and adjacent area.

Most of the names in the above two families agree with known names passed down orally to 2 people I have corresponded with in the past 10 years both descendants, via different branches 1 ending in Washington State USA, the other in BC, Canada. Thus there is a fairly high degree of confidence in Jane and Richard's pedigree.

The following information, somewhat condensed has been passed to me by my US contact:

Richard Cheeseman had joined the Hudson Bay Company in about 1849 and shortly afterwards had been assigned to Fort Victoria, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, and purchased some 5 acres of land in the settlement (only a few years after the Island became a British Colony under agreement with the US government). In 1852, Richard returned home to marry Jane and immediately the pair sailed in the HBC ship "Norman Morison" for Fort Victoria. During the voyage, Jane gave birth to her first child, reputedly in a severe storm, whilst rounding Cape Horn. They arrived at Fort Victoria in January 1853. Soon Richard obtained a release from the HBC, bought more land in the area north of Fort Victoria. Richard and Jane built a home and a Hotel they called "Royal Oak". By 1860 Jane and Richard had four children, but in 1862 Richard was killed when his horses bolted. Jane lived on to marry twice more. She died on August 20th 1897 and is buried at St Stephen's Anglican Church.


Ian, a number of Whiffens and Booker families were in the Kemsing area ( a Whiffen married one of my great great grandfather Jesse Dyke's daughters. Regards Bob.
