Hi Thor,
Coatbridge comes under Old Monkland, I had another look at the Lanarkshire 1851 index, I also had a look at the Glasgow index for 1851, sorry, But I can't see them there.

Hi capricorn

thanks for trying anyway, I am stumped since I know they were married there had their children there and james worked at rosehall colliery.  I really needed to pin down his wife jane/jean.  she was born jane/jean armstrong and trying to discover which one she is is proving a nightmare :-[ so I thought if it gave me a definate place of birth it would be a good start.

I suppose if she has said kirkcudbright in 1861 she may be there visiting relatives, the trouble is in later census she says she was born in glasgow or she just says scotland :-\

There is a Benson family living in Old Monkland in the 1851 index which has links with Kirkcudbright .... but it's not linked with the names you have given
Peter Benson 40 born Ireland
Margaret Benson 39 born Kirkcudbright
John Benson 18 born Kirkcudbright
Thomas 16 born Kirkcudbright
William 12 born Paisley
Ann 6 born Airdrie.

Hi falkryn

these bensons are his parents and siblings, I will try to widen the search now as it looks like they aren't in the general area :-\

Hi There,

Don't know if you are still out ther/interested in the bensons-but if you are can give you some later history as I have been investigating my wife's final history.

She goes back to James Benson-Peter's son born in 1828, who later moved to England to work as a miner in Staffordshire, married a jane and they had a biggish family.  He died there in 1869 and his wife in 1897.

Did you ever find out about Peter?

Cheers

Hi Chuzzle...yes this is the same family I have been looking into...James and Jane were my GGG Grandparents..not sure what info you already have on Peter, but he was Irish , married to Margaret Carson and he possibly had a brother Thomas born 1821....their parents were James Benson and Sarah Irving/Irvine...this James was a field labourer....other than that I haven't managed to find anything else out although if they were Irish its likely the came from Northern Ireland and the problem with Irish Family history is the lack of records.

Which of James' branch is your wife from?..I am from James 1863 twin of Isabella  :)
