Germany to Australia
« on: Thursday 15 December 05 11:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I am trying to find information on German relatives. There have been quite a few members of this family tree searching as well but we have had no luck.
My Gt Gt Gt Grandfather was Johann Gottlieb Lotze married to Joanna Louise Hellman. Johann was born in Hamburg Germany, Johanna we don't know. They were married in Germany. We have found a death record for Joanna in Australia but none for Johann leaving us to believe he may have died in Germany and Joanna came to Australia with her children. The first son Jacob William was born circa 1824 in Germay, second son Edward (Eduart) also born in Germany, daughter Marie Louise we don't know. Jacob William arrived on the San Francisco in 1852 so we assume Mother and siblings did too.
As I am new to family research any suggestions on how to proceed tracing them in Germany would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Ruth

Do you know where in Australia they landed?  If in New South Wales you could try the address listed below to find out if they arrived together -
http://mariners.records.nsw.gov.au/

New South Wales also has online records for births, deaths and marriages which may be of use -
http://www.bdm.nsw.gov.au/familyHistory/search.htm

Good luck.

Hi Ruth,

I searched some shipping records, the 1852 details you already have. However further searching found an earlier entry, could this be your Johann in 1844? Perhaps he came out first, then sent for his family after he'd got work and somewhere to live? Or maybe he's another person entirely. Sorry, this is all I can do.

Hope this helps.
Regards,
Candy

Hi both,

Candy, I read those entries as "arriving Clarence River from Sydney" - is that right?

If so, the Clarence River Historical Society might have some information, they have been very helpful with finding stuff about my McKay family who settled in Ulmarra in the 1890s:

Just a thought!

Hi Prue,

Yes, you read correctly!  ;D ;D I can't find any record of him arriving at Sydney. That's what it's all about... it's a great thought... passing on links & tips & help where we can. Thank you for letting us know.   :D :D

Cheers,
Candy
