Hi Rita,

I'm back on Hemsley. I trail around hunting down all sorts of lines and I've just realised that I know very little about one generation back of my own surname!

Very best wishes

Brig

I am interested in any info you may have on George Colbran married 11 Aug 1828 St. Alphage, Greenwich, Kent to Mary Phillips (bap 18 Sep 1799 in Hastings, died 1891-1901 New Shoreham, Sussex). Mary Phillips Colbran was identified as a widow in the 1851 censuses onwards.

The only lead I have on a possible matching George Colbran is that he may have been a gaoler in the Sussex gaol.
"A George Colbran was Gaoler at the Hastings Gaol, up until February 1842, when "the old gaoler, George Colbran, was pensioned off at the age of 71... Prisoners lived on the first and second storeys; the ground floor being for the keeper and his wife." p. ii Hastings Gaol Records 1832-1841.

1841 UK census - Sussex - Hastings - The Common Gaol Borough of Hastings
George Colbran, 71, The Keeper, born in Sussex
John Phillips, 21, assistant, born in Sussex
James Warren, 21, Prisoner/Harness Maker

I also have an orphan ancestor who lived with Mary Phillips' sister's family with the last name Goddin/Godden/Godding and would be interested if you have found any of your Gorringe members with similar spelling changes.

Thanks!
Godden/Godding Gallop from Sussex to Australia; Gelston from Ireland to Australia; Biggar from Scotland to Canada; Green from Ireland to Canada; Hodgkinson from Sheffield to Canada; Others in Australia - Powell, Doran, Pike, Ferriday, Bourke, Rumble, Whisler; Others in Canada - Bigham, Orr, Fairlie, McKay, McPhail, Kauffman

Hi  Have just started my tree again and am researching the followng surnames

Goodsell, Simes. Brown. Ritson, Gutsall , Morris.

Does any one have information on George Goodsell who is reported to have been hanged in Sussex about 1833  Have searched but can find no mention.  Any photos that anyone has of any of the above families would love to see them.
