Thanks for explaining all that for me!  It's strange how there sometimes is a long gap between generations, for whatever reason.  One of my ancestors in the 18thC didn't marry until he was fifty years old, and this created a similar effect.
Have not been able to get further back than 4-times gt-grandfather Francis DUFFIELD, and know nothing of the name's origin as yet.
Will continue to look for my vital green notebook to see whether I might have jotted down details about your Susanna...

Thanks Keith by the way did I also see that you where searching for the name Miles.  As you can see that is my family (susanna Duffield married Samuel Miles.  Am I right on that?

The MILES family that married into my SHERWOOD family were from the Bath area, though I've never got any further than about the 1830's with them...
