Searching for a death?

First, hope I'm in the appropriate forum - there doesn't appear to be one about 'Internet Searching' or 'Internet Resources'?

I'm new to this hobby (4 weeks), currently bulding trees for PINNELL and COTTRELL / COTTERILL. How do more experienced UK users set about finding the date of a death in the 1900-2000 period please? The FreeBMD facility is great up to around 1900, but then has very few entries transcribed.

I've been using the 1837online service recently (pay per view). But a major flaw IMO is the way it presents 'hits'. Searching on William Pinnell, to find his date of death somewhere in say a 10 year period, it presents a whole range of names, split over quarters.

I'd have to pay to view 40 sets of results in ranges like these

PINCHETTI, Pieri a - PLATT, Lily
PILE, William Harold - PLATT, Eliza
PINFOLD, Ada - PLOWS, James William
PILLATT, Christopher - PLATT, Frederick
etc

in order to see if any of them even contain a William Pinnell!

Hi Terry, i don't know of any other way of doing it other than the one you mention, thats what i always do.

Its a pain , but its not too expensive, 110 credits for £10, so even if you use 40 its only costing about a fiver, you can always bet you don't find it until credit number 39!!!!

As you are fairly local to London, I would suggest that, if you can find a spare day, you take a trip to the Family Records Centre at Angel Islington. Here you can view the BMD indexes in person. It is these index books that you see online at 1837online. Many people are disappointed that 1837onlne is not a database, (i.e key in a name, comes back with 'finds')  but is in fact a chance to look through the complete indexes in the same way as you would in person.
The FRC, as well as holding the indexes for Births, mariages and deaths, also holds all censuses (1841,51,61,71,81,91,01) , some indexes to wills (cant remeber date range ) and loads of other stuff.
It is open 6 days a week, with some late nights.
If you can get there, it is worth the cost of a day return train ticket from most of the home counties. (cost very comparable with buying lots of credits on pay to view sites) Great fun, lots under the same roof. Enjoy!

I am sure I got an e-mail from another supplier recently, telling me that their indexing was superior to others' and that it would be easier and cheaper to use them to locate bmds.

Can I find it?  I can not!

Put me out of my misery someone, please!

Liz: Yes, I'm looking forward to my first outing to the FRC. Only about 20 mins brisk walk to East Grinstead station, and then an hour by train to Victoria. But I want to get an extensive list of 'hard questions' prepared methodically first!

               Just sent for another couple of cert's   
   I also print off every "view" so soon I shall have a complete set to rival the FRC. 

      Just a marriage, that's all.
                         Huh, I've tried the sibling birth's, thier possible death's etc. etc.

Just a thought - I'm not familiar with your area, but is there a local Records Office  or perhaps large library that might also have a copy of the full BMD indexes on microfiche? It would save you the trek to the FRC.

My local Record Office has a good set of fiche, and also has the index to Probate and Letters of Adminstration to help with finding wills.
