1891 census lookup
« on: Sunday 11 December 05 08:36 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS find William Bennie (machinery merchant) b ca 1823 Glasgow and his wife Mary Ann b ca 1823-31 in the 1891 census. In 1881 they were living at 4 Dunn St, Calton.

The 1881 census has Mary Ann born Leven Dunbarton but I think I found her living in Renfrewshire in 1841 - born Ireland!

I'm hoping the 1891 census will confirm her birthplace - one way or the other :-)

Many thanks
Jan

Hi Jan,

Didn't check the 1891, but did find the family in the 1861census, living at 301 Dalmuir Road
William Bennie head 36 Dyer-Cotton born Lanark Rutherglen
Mary Bennie Wife 31 born Dunbartonshire Leven
John Bennie son 12 Message Boy Print ?
William Bennie son 10 Scholar
Robert Bennie son 8 Scholar
Margaret Bennie daughter 5
Jane Bennie daughter 2
Mary Bennie daughter 1
Children all born Lanarkshire, Glasgow

Looks like Mary Ann may well have been born in the Vale of Leven area of Dumbartonshire. Do you know who her parents were?

Regards,
Isobel

Hi Isobel,
Thanks so much for the lookup - it's great to have Mary Ann's birthplace confirmed. Her age gives a birthdate ca 1830 which fits with the age on her death certificate. She was Mary Ann Cook, daughter of John Cook and Margaret McWatt. I've checked the IGI but didn't find her birth there, or a marriage for her parents. I did find two sons born to these parents in Renfrewshire, Robert in 1829 and John in 1842 - a huge gap there!
Best wishes
Jan
PS Litte Jane, aged 2, was my great grandmother :-)
