McCourtie
« on: Wednesday 08 September 04 12:50 BST (UK) »
looking for info on Robert McCourtie son of John & Ann McCourtie born possibly about 1845ish in the parish of Closeburn. I think he married a Jessie Griffin either there or when he emigrated to Australia where he died in 1917.

I have wrong date as he married jessie Giffin in Aus 1858 so had to be born no later than 1840. does anybody have 1841 census by chance?

Hiya marriedwithkids,

Have you seen this excellent resource?

http://www.dumgal.gov.uk/services/depts/comres/library/census_searchresults.asp

This is the 1851 census for Dumfriesshire online and freeeeeee  ;D

There are 30 McCourtie peeps I can see.  This family has the right parent names...kinda... mother might be Mary Ann or a different mum?

Household No: 2/27 (search on the bold bit in the Household No. field and Closeburn in the parish, will give you the details.)

Dinning, Closeburn
John McCourtie 35 Mar Farm Servant Bn Kelton Kirkcudbright
Mary McCourtie 28 Mar  Bn Caerlaverock Dumfriesshire
Robert McCourtie 6 Son Born Holywood Dumfriesshire
George McCourtie 4 Son Born Closeburn Dumfriesshire
Mary McCourtie 2 Dau Born Closeburn Dumfriesshire

There seems to be a strong Kirkcudbright connection looking at the other results. William in Dumfries married to Ann has to be a brother or Cousin of this John above - some good leads though!

I reckon John's father will be called Robert and Mary's George by the naming convention.  I have access to Cloesburn OPR I'll try and look up Robert's birth but it may be a week before I get to the library.

Hope this helps,
Pam

These are the correct McCourtie's

John McCourtie born in Scotland, married Ann Hewitson born CUL Cumwhiton (don't know where this is). Robert was born CUL Crosby (not sure where this is) and shows on death certificate as being born in  Maryport England, and the family is on the 1851 maryport Census.

Hiya,

I'm getting all confused?   ???

Does that mean the family in Closeburn 1851 is incorrect if they are on the Maryport census?

I have access to 1841 census but they are unindexed - if you let me know  who you expect to see and where you expect to see them I'll have a look for them.

Cheers,
Pam

Sorry Pam, didn't mean to confuse you. My sister is 'married with kids' and she posted this for me before I registered myself. I now have a copy of Robert McCourtie's death certificate showing his birth place as Maryport. I posted a query and they have been found on the Maryport 1851 census. According to the 1851 Maryport census the father John was born in Scotland, but he is in Maryport for the census. Looking at the two census' the McCourtie's in Closeburn could very well be relatives. Both John's are the same age.

The 1815 Census records: at Fleming Square, Maryport

John McCourtie /H/M/35/Rail Lab/Scotland
Ann McCourtie  /W/M/55/CUL Cumwhiton?
Robert McCourtie /S/14/Scolar/CUL Crosby

I believe this is the Robert McCourtie who married Jessie Griffin.

I also think John's age is a transcription error and should read '55'.  There is a baptism record for a John McCourtie on 15 August 1795, Tinwald, Dumfries, Scotland. Parents are James William McCourtie & Mary Bryden (SCT OPR No: 849/000001)

James & Mary McCourtie had five other children:

William c:4 Jun 1793
Mary 22 Dec 1797
James 6 Mar 1800
Robert Dalzell 11 Jun 1802
Unknown 1 Mar 1804 (this name may be illegible in the OPR register) All children were baptised in Tinwald.

I've not been able to find a marriage for James & Mary or a birth for James William McCourtie, but there are two James McCourties:

James McCourtie c: 1 Apr 1764, Kells. Parents: William & -

James McCourtie c: 13 May 1769, Kells. Parents: John & Margaret (McCaw)

I think Kells is in Kirkcudbright - need to check.

Ann, the wife of John McCourtie, seems to be Ann Hewitson c: 4 Aug 1795, Cumwhiton, Cumberland. Parents: Joseph Hewitson & Jane Grindal (married 2 Aug 1782, Skelton, Cumberland.  I have more on this line if anyone is interested.

Hope this helps.

Hello.

Thought I'd just add my bit.  It may help but may cause more confusion.

I am doing my family tree for the Murray's of Kirkcudbrightshire.

My gg grandmother Agnes married William Murray in 1859 in Kelton/Rhonehouse.  Her parents were Mary and Matthew Blacklock a showmaker.  Agnes' marriage and death certificate mention that Mary's maiden name was McCourtie.  They are spelt differently on each occasion. I think Agnes must have been born at about 1836.  If her parents were about 20 years older than her Mary would have been born at about 1815.

I think that the town of Balmaclellan must have had a shomaking busineess.

There is a famous clog making factory which still exists in the town.  I'm going up to that area in a fortnight's time for a holiday and to do some research.

Hope this is of help.
