Lindsay,

Not to shift the topic, but have you come across any Morrison families in Scotland who favored the given names Adam or Joseph? DNA matches have confirmed that my Morrisons lived in the Coleraine/North Antrim area in the early 1700's, so now I'm hoping to learn where they lived in Scotland. Other popular given names in the family were Samuel and James. Thanks for checking...

Edwin

Hi Edwin, coincidence - was just thinking about you the other day :)

Sorry, I haven't. I have Adam (Old Kilpatrick and Renfrew 1823) his name came his mother's side, Adam (Falkirk 1845) and one Joseph (Falkirk 1809) in my collection.   Obviously you know they are not in my family, just some I have collected.

Now I know that you are interested in these names, I'll add them to my list and keep an eye out for you.

regards,

Lindsay

Thanks, Lindsay. Those are the given names I have to work with: Samuel, James, Adam and Joseph. I was focusing on Adam and Joseph because they are less common, but they may have come into the family after these Morrisons moved to Ulster. I think the names Samuel and Joseph go back to the 1600's at least, but Samuel seems to have been a popular Morrison name about that time.

The most distinctive given name in my Morrison family is that of Hans Morrison, my immigrant American ancestor. But I find no other Hans Morrisons around Coleraine, so that name may have come through the maternal side. There is record of a Hans Stewart in the same parish in 1740, a likely connection. Otherwise that given name seems most common with the Hamiltons and in Co. Down.

We'll all learn more in time.

Hi Barbara, a little bit more ...

28th December 1860 at 35, Abbotsford Place, Glasgow, marriage according to the forms of the Reformed Presbyterian Church between Robert Morrison and Elizabeth Turner (her 'X' mark).

Robert, Cartwright Apprentice was 20 of  32, Sully (??) Lane, Glasgow, son of Elijah Morrison (Railway Mineral? Porter) and Elizabeth Elder.

Elizabeth, Power Linen Weaver was 18 of 23, Salisbury Street, Glasgow, daughter of John Turner (Seaman, Merchant Service) and Mary Ann Finlay.

Info above does not come from the IGI, but the IGI does have a pedigree history file for some of this family, appears that Elijah married Elizabeth Elder, 4 Oct 1839 Kilmarnock but you will need to check IGI info yourself. The submitter's name is listed, address in England.

regards,

Lindsay Morrison

p.s. if you or your family are still called Morrison, you might want to think about contacting Edwin, the Morrison DNA Project is throwing up a lot interesting stuff.
