McDavid/McDivit/Malone Marriage
« on: Thursday 08 December 05 00:10 GMT (UK) »
Hello Board

Can anyone help me, my gt gt grandmother Catherine Malone married John McDavid/McDivitt, John was in the 80th and 51st foot regiments from 1820-1842, there is a time frame where it reads the 4 yrs between 1834 and 1838 were "spent at home", I am thinking that this is when John and Catherine may have married.

John and Catherine leave Britain to come to Australia in 1838,,, they have at least one son before they arrive, possilby born on the way over, he is called James Andrew McDivitt, he dies age 3 by drowning, in Tasmania. It is possible that they had an older son called William McDavid, but we have no proof that William was their son, he could have been John's brother, but I suspect rather thier son, which means it is another birth for me to find

If anyone had access to any records that may help with this family it would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers from Australia
Mae Bone

Hi

The 51st Regiment left Tasmania for Western Australia in 1838.  some of the Regiment took their discharge in WA and stayed in the colony.  Their regiment was renamed and went to India.  My G G G G grandfather was part of the 51st and I have transcripts from the WA library.  Looking at the transcripts there are no McDavid's or McDivitts listed on the reels from the library in WA, so he may have stayed in Tasmania of left for WA and then India.

Thank you for your reply, so sorry it has taken me so long to see it.
Yes my chap was in teh 51st Regt and he went to Tasmania as a part of it. He took his discharge in Hobart and he then was assigned to Norfolk Island as an Assistant Superintendent.
He died on the island in 1852.
Not long ago we learnt that his first child was born Jan 1838 in Chatham, UK..
So he must of left soon after the birth, with wife and child, with the 51st.
It has been hard trying to pin down the ship that brought him out as the 51st seems to have come out in dribs and drabs, according to what I have found on Trove.
Any info you can add would be greatly appreciated.
