Hi thanks for the reply.
i know they were farmworkers and were always moving about so this looks promising. All i want to find out now is why granddad John Halliday,son of Richard Halliday, was the only one born in Tow Law Co Durham in 1873. All the other members of the family were born around Yorkshire. It seems a long way in those days to go looking for work.

I think the answer to Richards children's, various birth places, was that he was a carter.
Delivery journeys were often weeks with waits for loads to come back, wife and children
sometimes travelled with hubby, as did Bargees wives. Little wonder that the children
were born on long journeys on the Turnpikes. Just an idea after lots of reading about
conditions in the past. Two of my ancestors, father and blind son, in the  late 1700 early
1800,s worked on the Turnpikes in Yorkshire, to supplement the fathers moleskin tailoring
earnings.

thankx for the info. it is the right family. the place of birth is Appleton yorks not Hopperton, it nust be the way it's written on the census. At least i now William's wife's name this is the first census that has shown it.
