1841/1851 ER Yorkshire/Hull
« on: Monday 06 September 04 21:20 BST (UK) »
I am looking for the ASKAM family in 1841, probably in Hull.
I have also seen it written ASKHAM and ASHAM

According to Pigot’s 1841 Directory, John Askam was a grocer at 63 Market Place, Hull
By 1851, a directory has (the son) John Fairburn Askam as the grocer at 63 Market Place.

John ASKAM (b. circa 1800)
Elizabeth ASKAM (b. circa 1800)
Robert Fairburn ASKAM bap. 1824 Hull
Emma Fairburn ASKAM bap. 1827 Hull
John Fairburn ASKAM bap. 1830 Hull
Harriett ASKAM bap. 1836 Hull

I would also be interested in any of them in 1851.
Emma Fairburn Askam and John Fairburn Askam are on the 1851 census for Holy Trinity, Hull. I don’t know where the rest are. Some may have died, but I know Harriet didn’t die until 1869 and she didn’t marry until 1854.

Thank you for any help.
Belen

I have just come across your requests for information on the Askam family from the chat posting in 2004 and wonder if you have subsequently found all that you need.  My mother's father was a John Fairburn Askam and we can trace his forebears back to your John Askam in Hull (b c.1800 d. 28.9.1949) together with some of his desendants.  However this does not include the Harriet Askam of whom you were inquiring but does include some of her siblings.  The family name of John Fairburn Askam continues to this day with my cousin.  We are in the Birmingham area.
If you are interested in an information exchange please let me know.

Hi All,

1841 Census
Market Place,
Holy Trinity, Yks
HO107/1230/7/Holy Trinity

John ASKAM, 45, Grocer
Elizabeth, 35
Robert, 15
John Fairburn, 11
Emma, 13
Harriett, 5
All born in County

1851 Census Harriet appears to be in Derbyshire.
Harriet ASKAM, 14, Scholar, born Hull
She is not down as a Servant but is living with the Marshall Family.
HO107/2143/824/2

Did Harriet marry the same qtr of 1854, Hull, as her Brother John Fairburn Askam?
Was it to John MARSHALL?  or Henry RIVETT ?
Could she be with her in laws in 1851 if it was John Marshall?

Trish :)

Here are some of the entries you need taken from the |EYFHS Sculcoates Mariage Registers and Holy Trinity Baptisms 1830 - June 1837 where whole families were baptised before the start of the Civil Registration on the 1st July 1837, fearing they would be in trouble by the Government for not doing so.

Hi PlainBob,
Welcome to Rootschat :)
Belen has not been online for a little while but should get notification of your posting if there email address has not changed.
You need 3 postings before you can use the Rootschat Personal Message System through which you can exchange email details.

Hi gogogadgetlegs :)
Thank you for that info and I found it interesting what you said about a rush of Christenings just before Civil Reg began.

Thank you Trish1120 for the reply and helpful information.  I'll wait to see if Belen logs in.
I wasn't aware of the 3 postings requirement for exchanging direct messages.

As a newcomer I find there are lots of genealogy abbreviations. I have found the threads to pages that give some abbreviations but would have thought this is so fundamental that an abbreviations page should be included in the RootsChat FAQs itself.  (Is a moderator listening?)

Hi,

Thank you to Plain Bob, Trish 1120, Gogogadgetlegs and Clivealbert for your replies even though it is many years after my original post.  I never received an e-mail to say that their were recent messages, perhaps because of the time lag. So, it was a surprise to find this follow up, by accident, today.

Harriet Askam was at "school" in Derbyshire in the 1851 census, possibly sent there as her parents had died in 1848 and 1849 respectively. She married Henry Rivett (a hosier) and they had a son Henry Charles Hatfield Rivett in 1861 who moved to the U.S. after his parents died young in 1869 and 1876. Harriet, her sister, Elizabeth Fairburn Askam and her brother John Fairburn Askam, all married in 1854. The other brother, Robert had moved to Victoria, Australia.

As Plain Bob, I was not aware of a way to exchange e-mail addresses, but would be happy to share information. I have already shared a great deal of information and newspaper copies with someone called Ruth who must fit somewhere in your family.

Best wishes,
Belen
