Where in Hampshire is Cloisters/Cloisten?
« on: Saturday 03 December 05 13:51 GMT (UK) »
I am researching George Budden and according to the 1871 to 1891 censuses he was born in 1834 in Poole or in 1837 in Christchurch, (1891 census).

There is a soldier called George Budden listed in the 1861 census born in Christchurch in 1832 and the 1851 census, (HO107/1481/399/17), shows, (probably), the same person born in 1831 in either Cloisters or Cloisten in Hants. As he could be the George I am looking for I would like to identify his place of birth.

Does anyone know where this is? I have checked Ordnance Survey, GenUKI, OldMaps and other sources with no success. It is possible that it is a farm in the Christchurch area.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Viv

Hi Viv

A place by that name does not readily come to mind.  I've attached, to perhaps help ???

Just a thought,

Would Cloisters have been the name for Christchurch in those days?

Nice idea!  But it doesn't seem to have been.  I've been looking at various descriptions of Christchurch and nothing seems to match up at the moment.  There are plenty of Cloisters which pop up when googling Cloisters and Hampshire, mainly new housing developments all over the county!

It may be worth contacting Hampshire Record Office for real local knowledge.  They may be able to help.

I live in Christchurch, and the name Cloisters doesn't do anything for me. The Priory church did have cloisters, but I believe they were pulled down during the Dissolution. I will check the local resources, old maps etc to see if anything looks hopeful.

Best wishes

He wouldn't have been born in a convent or nunnery - would he?
Are there / were there any in Christchurch?

If the mother was in difficulties during the birth - maybe she would have been taken to the Nursing Sisters ......

Just a thought!

We had monks years ago,but no nuns - but worth a go!
Still no sign of Cloisters/Cloisten. There is a good museum in Christchurch, at

http://www.hants.gov.uk/museum/redhouse/

which is worth a try.
One last thought - it's not a bad mishearing of Christchurch, said in a broad Dorset accent? Try it a few times - it'll amuse people nearby if nothing else!

Best wishes
