If you visit my Calderdale Companion website and take a look at the entry entitled Gaol Lane, Halifax at

     http://members.aol.com/_ht_a/calderdale/mms240.html#g7

you'll find a short description of the local prisons.

Just follow the links and you'll get to the Hanson Lane jail.

If you want to add, elaborate any entries, or make any suggestions for information that you would like to see there, please email me directly

Regards

Malcolm, Thanks for that link - very useful.

That seems a lot of prisoners! That ancestor of mine must have had his hands full!

hi Malcolm,
I am interested in the Halifax Debtors prison as well. my 4th Great Grandfather was supposed to have been in the Debtors prison in 1821, the year his second son Alexander Lee Place was born. We know little about it.  I have been trying to find the piece in the paper where it says he went to prison.  I think it was the London Gazette, but I cannot find it.  Alexander was a bookkeeper and later known as an Attorneys Clerk.. I have no idea which attorney.  We have been trying to find out more about him as he wasn't born in Halifax.

Are there any known records of Debtors in Halifax you know of please.

John Marchant is my wife's ancestor. He was her x2 Great uncle. She is descended from his brother Joseph.
