Brickwall!. Completed with Thanks
« on: Wednesday 30 November 05 11:10 GMT (UK) »
Can anybody help me with my brickwall pls.
Looking for a death for JAMES HICKS b ( 1852? )1891 onwards.
1876 married Elizabeth Bradley ( nee Parsons)
1881 census with wife and family, Bermondsey ( boot reinter)
1891 census with wife, family, and visitor Horace Croxson ( b 1866)
1901 census Elizabeth is on census records as being married to Horace Croxson with her children and daughter May Croxson age 3 yrs.
I can not seem to find a marraige for Horace and Elizabeth, or a death for James Hicks.
Horace Croxson died 1940 Southend, probate was left to May Croxson ( spinster)
Any ideas on this one pls, Rose x

I must of overlooked that one, yes it could be him. He could have died shortly after the 1891 census. He was living 98 Abbey st Bermondsey. I wonder if he died in a hospital ( Mile End Old Town)
Many thanks Rose x

Not sure of you have this, looks a likely child of Horace (brother to May) who died young

Birth Horace Walter Croxson Jun 1899 Lambeth 1d/502
Death Horace Walter Croxson Sep 1899 (age 0) 1d/347

The only May Croxson I can find born in 1898 is
Ethel May Croxson Mar 1898 Romford 4a/514

I have tried all variants for Elizabeth's marriage to Horace and cannot find anything either.  Maybe they did not marry at all.

Thanks Claudia, I was not aware that there was another child apart from May, and Elizabeths children from her previous marraiges. I only know of May as she is on the 1901 census. ( Daughter). They were living KENT Road London.
Thanks for trying, maybe they just lived together, common law hubby and wife.

Hi everyone I found the birth for May Croxson, she was registered under Hicks ( mothers surname), She has Croxson( fathers surname) as her middle name.
Was this common if the parents were not married?

Rose,
Yes I've seen this often with unmarried parents using father's surname as a middle name.
Glad you found her.

Just to let everyone know who has helped me with this post !
I have found the marraige of Horace Croxson, and Elizabeth Hicks.
1901 census states them as being married, but the marraige took place 1920, its no wonder it took me so long to find them! :)
Just wonder now as to why the big gap?
