Hi tam gamley,
Where did you get the information you already have?
Have you looked at the IGI on FamilySearch at:
http://www.familysearch.orgThe marriage of Robert HUNTER and Elizabeth PATERSON appears - 14 Nov 1862.
If you enter Robert HUNTER in the father boxes, and Elizabeth PATERSON in the mother boxes, it brings up births of several children.
Extracted entries (i.e. extracted by the LDS from the Statutory Register) are:
Stewart (female) b 30 Jul 1864 Aberdour
Alexander b 13 Jul 1860 Dalgety
Margaret b 13 Jun 1872 Dunfermline
Elisabeth b 27 Jul 1874 Aberdour
There are also submissions by members of the LDS for two further children:
Isabella b 2 Oct 1862 Dunfermline
William b 1 Jul 1866 Aberdour
Here is Robert in the 1841 census.
Donibristle Colliery, Aberdour'
HUNTER William, 30, Coal Miner, born Fife
BROWN Stewart (female), 30, born Scotland but not Fife
HUNTER George, 12, born Scotland but not Fife
HUNTER William, 10, born Fife
HUNTER Alexr, 7, born Fife
HUNTER Alice, 5, born Fife
HUNTER Robert, 2, born FifeRemember that, in the 1841 census, relationships were not stated, and ages of persons aged over 15 were rounded down to the nearest 5.
This particular census enumerator chose to list married women by their maiden names - for which genealogists should thank him!
You should be able to find much more information on the pay-per-view site ScotlandsPeople at:
http;//www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
It will have the marriage of Robert and Elizabeth (a free search finds just one marriage of a Robert HUNTER and an Elizabeth PATERSON at the relevant time - it is in 1862). The marriage certificate should list the ages and occupations of Robert and Elizabeth, and - for each of them - the name and occupation of the father, and name and maiden surname of the mother and also whether they were deceased.
If the parents of Robert and Elizabeth survived into the time of Statutory Registration (began in 1855), you might be able to find their death certificates (though the names known to date are not uncommon unfortunately). Death certificates give (if known) the name and occupation of the father of the deceased, and the name and maiden surname of the mother - thus taking you back a further generation.
Deaths of married women are indexed under their married names and (if known) their maiden names. A free search on ScotlandsPeople finds just one death of a Stewart HUNTER, other name BROWN. Narrowing the search parameters finds that the death took place in 1877 and that the deceased was aged ca 69.
Over to you.
Good luck,
JAP
PS: There are many other LDS submissions in the IGI on FamilySearch relating to this family - an enormous amount of information. While LDS submissions need to be treated with care - some are reliable but others are little more than guesswork - these look good but would still need to be verified against original sources. They indicate that Robert's parents were William HUNTER and Mary Stewart BROWN; and that Elizabeth's parents were Alexander PATERSON and Isabella GROSSET, etc, etc, etc. Once you confirm all the information from ScotlandsPeople, you might also wish to search the archives of the Rootsweb Fife mailing list at:
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/SCT/SCT-FIFE.html
The Fife Family History Society site has a good search facility and much information. It is at:
