Hi,

Do you know who would have the buriel records for St Mary's Church in Hemel Hempstead <1750. I have been in touch with the Vicar, Jenny Hill, about the gravestones and she informed me that they were removed from around the church in the 1950's. I still am in shock....it seems they were dumped. I am afraid to ask about the buriel records, she might tell me they were burned to make space for something. I talked with some fellow genealogist and they said that they heard of relocating gravestones but never getting rid of them. I have posted a message to several groups and so far no one has heard of such a thing. Are you familiar with what happened at the church to cause them to be removed or where they could be. I am interested in the Bowles gravestones. Marvin Bowles d. <1725> and his Mother Mary/Marie Bowles who predeceased him.

Hey Ray,

Got all three and already transcribed. Marvin states in his Will that he wanted to be buried next to his mother in the churchyard of "the church at Hemelhempsted".  I assume that the church at that time was St. Mary's...how close is that church to Waterend. FYI he also owned the "Red Lion" Inn.

Do you know who would have the burial records?

Thanks

Hi Carlp

St Mary's H/H isn't the only place where this has happened, some time ago I was told that gravestones at St Marys in Rickmansworth had been removed to make way for a new car park. :o However, the burial records were deposited at HALS so that's possibly where the Hemel ones are.

Hi Carlp

Headstone removal and subsequent disposal - Knowing of "a few" cemeteries where there are no stones I have assumed that, over time, crumbling headstones were "disposed of".

If you have positive evidence of Marvin and The Red Lion then please send the detail to DeadPubs.co.uk where RootsChatter "Kevan" adds details to his database. Easy to guess his email address.    :)

I remember when they removed the gravestones but they used to be leaning up against the wall round the graveyard. Pulling them uop was bad enough.  I can't believe they actually got rid of them! Vandals!

A friend in the USA has offered to try and find them in the monumental inscriptions records that LDS has. I can't get the tapes here in Abaco. Also hope that I get a positive reply from St John the baptist church on Leonard Bowles,  d. 1768. He should have had a big gravestone or tomb he had lots of money. In his will he mentions the Three Thousand + pounds he loaned his son Leonard who lived in New Providence, Bahamas.

Still hopeful
