Jan:

Your people sound familiar but I did not find them in a scan of my database.  As I did for Tony, I shall ask another researcher to check his database for you.

Jan:

Once again Andrew Macfarlane in New Zealand has come through for us.  His database has your Christine as "Cursty" which I take to = Kirstie for Christine.  He will note her marriage to Thomas Black.

Terrance

Thanks for this info on Mary Ann Mcfarlane

She is my great grandmother and married my great grandfather Reginald Ames.

Ironic the research came from a New Zealand researcher - as I live in New Zealand?

cheers

Tony

actually i don't think this Mary Ann Mcfarlane (born Scotland) can be my one.

my mary ann mcfarlane is most likely:

mary ann mcfarlin born jun 1873 stepney ref 1c 451

in both the 1901 and 1911 census her birth place is listed as stepney.

on her marriage cert 1884 to robert ames she has signed with a 'x' so she most likely can not write - that is probably why we keep coming across numerous spelling variations for her name.

I think we are related! I can also trace my family line from Peter McFarlane and Catherine McLellan, through Christina McFarlane and two generations of Peter McFarlane Black (Johnstone, Scotland), ending up in Cardiff, to where they moved in 1914.

Best Regards
Robert

Dear Jan

Oh, dear, I cannot even read my own family tree correctly.

That should have read one generation of Peter McFarlane Black. He was born in 1871, in Johnstone, and married Sarah Logan in 1894. They had five children. The second Peter McFarlane Black was my uncle.

Robert

Dear Chevalier

Thanks for your informative post, which I have been checking against my own records.

On my family tree, I have noted that the 1861 census shows a Jean McFarlane (Jane L McFarlane, born ~1845 in Kilcalmonell/Kilberry) living with the Peter McFarlane [7017] and Catherine McLellan [7026] family in Back Street, Tarbert Loch Fyne. You do not mention her. Do you think she would have been a relative or an unrecorded daughter? Are there any clues in your data?

Peter and Catherine died of cholera in 1854. The children survived and, I believe, were brought up by the Hay family, then Peter McFarlane [7018]/Janet Hay [7019], who you mention.

There had been several outbreaks of cholera in the region at that time and over the previous decade. The real tragedy is that bleaching power, a portable form of chlorine, still sometimes used to treat water in remote areas, had been available since 1800 from a factory in Glasgow. I think they just did not realise at that time that cholera was a water-borne disease.

Best Regards
Robert

Hi Robert,

I have Peter McFarlane BLACK's birth as 23 Nov 1870 in Graham Street, Johnstone. His marriage to Sarah Duffy LOGAN on 20th April 1894 at Quarrelton Road, Johnstone, and three children Thomas 1894, Henry 1898 and Christina 1901.

Thomas and Christina I can trace to Cardiff and have their burial together with their parents, Henry I have nothing on at all!

Thomas BLACK 1894 is my husbands great grandfather. Christina 1901 never married and looked after her mother Sarah right up to her death in 1970 at the fabulous age of 90, Christina died the following year.  The family remember Sarah very well, and it is of note that she hated Wales/Cardiff - calling it "a grimey town".

If Peter 1870 was your uncle does that mean that you are descended from Henry or one of the two children I don't yet know about?  I can't wait to hear back from you and fill in some of the blanks, but I may be a little slow at replying for a few days as I am away from home until Monday and then straight back into work on Tuesday.

All the best to you
Jan
