Yes,

I think there is a bit of an ongoing saga here.  The story goes that his family back in Germany refused to continue contact with him because he became a Presbyterian to get married and they were Orthodox Jews.

Anyhow the schoolmaster may have been at a christian school because it seems to be an ongoing theme with him.  The work in the churches is a classic example.   He did a beautiful floor for the church in Cork, which now seems under threat of removal:

Irish Oppose Proposed Wreckovation in Co Cork
The move requires the removal of large portions of the mosaic floor laid by Ludwig Oppenheimer, of Manchester,
who worked on the Co Cork cathedral built between 1867 and 1919.

Last thought for the day and no hurry on this one.

There is this:

Joseph Oppenheimer, merchant, has a business at 52 Brown Street & a
house at Crowcroft Cottage, Levenshulme in the early 1860's and later was
listed at York House in Oxford Street where Ludwig had also been.

I'm wondering if we can establish a connection between them on the 1841 or 1851 census.

Many thanks again for your time and energy.

No Ludwig or Joseph Oppenheimer on the 1851  but parts of the census returns in the Manchester area were damaged by water during storage.

Hi Kirsten,
My Gt Grand Niece was Clara Sopho Cartali, who I believe married Charles Oppenheimer in 1903.
I have been looking for Cartali for years. Clara father was my Gt. Gt. Grandfather.

 :)

Apologies for the delay.  Lost all my archives on an un-backed-up laptop and then after re-entering everything on a brand spaking new desktop model lost it all again as the new one had some fatal flaw and had to be returned to the manufacturers.

So here I am pleased to see a lovely connection between our Artisan Oppenheimers and the Cartali family.

Please forgive the lack of any additional helpful information at this stage.  I have kept a log of this thread and will get back to you with some more details once I have "refound" all my information about the Oppenheimers.  Until then I will keep your details I received an email from an Academic researching the Oppenheimer family for a University project on their art and family history.

Kindest and best wishes
Kirsten

I have some information that might be of help. Ludwig Oppenheimer born c.1830 in Brunswick, Germany, was mosaic artist who lived in Manchester and married Susan McCulloch (nee Finlay). He founded the company Ludwig Oppenheimer Ltd. Their sons were Lehman (d. 8 November 1916), Ludwig jnr, Albert and Charles 1875-1961 who became a well known 'Scottish' artist who lived in Kirckudbright and married in 1903 to Contance Emily (nee Taylor). It appears that another relation was Frederick Oppenheimer 1893-1965,who changed his name to Eric Newton and was also a well known artist and art critic.

Informative websites are:

My interest is in Charles and his wife Constance and her family - any information would be gratefully received!  :)
