Connecting up the Rustage variants
« on: Friday 25 November 05 17:34 GMT (UK) »
Its extremely likely that all the following names derive from the same original family :

Rustage, Rustige, Rustidge, Rustedge, Rushtich, Rughsich, Roughsich, Roughsedge, Roughsuch etc.

I am trying to put together a chart that shows the links that connect these names up.

If anybody has direct knowledge of a change of name/spelling in their own branch of the family or as a result of their own research could you please post the information here? Typically someone who spells their name one way but knows they have a relative who spelled it differently or different records of the same person but showing different spellings would be the kind of evidence I need.

Note the chart is just to show the name changes - its not the complete family history of all the above names (thats a much bigger project that I am still working on!).

Many thanks

Phil Rustage
(of the branch that went Rainhill->Tabley->Salford->Droylsden->Ashton-u-Lyne)

My great grandmother was married, in Manchester 1873, as Mary Rustadge.
The census data gives her place of birth as West Derby and I have associated her with the Mary Roughsedge bapt.12 Mar 1854 and traced her family back through Tarbock and Widnes to Farnworth.
She appears as nee Rustidgue on her son's birth cert.
Her father, Ralph, appears as Roughsedge, Roustedge, Rustigue, and Rustage in the censuses.

I revisiting the name after a long gap.

www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html has 36 records - although RUSTAGE is the most common spelling - 1658 , the first record , is spelt RUSTICH ...
which just to complicate things more....you don`t have in your list of spellings ...
for Cheshire Rustage surname go to
www.csc.liv.ac.uk/~cprdb then click database  , then baptisms , will give your their variations of the spelling - 1767 is the first record in Tabley.Cheshire
good luck
