Italians in Scotland
« on: Thursday 24 November 05 15:50 GMT (UK) »
My gggrandfather John Lando came from Genoa in 1850 at the age of 14 but I cannot find him on the naturalisation list on The National Archives web site even though he is on the censuses as a British subject. All the people that have been naturalised are listed from 1844 and there are many from Italy.

He was in Biggar Scotland on the 1851 Census, married Margaret Finlayson in 1853 and moved to West Linton Scotland ran a small farm and died in 1917.

Hoping that someone can put me on the right course to find any further info.

Maggie

Hi Maggie,

I'm wondering why John's name is on the Census as a British subject and yet he's not on the National Archives website naturalisation list. It doesn't make much sense to me unless one of the transcribers accidently omitted a name. If it's possible for you or someone acting on your behalf to visit the Archives to look at the Naturalisation list that may reveal something.

Chris,
The family story is that John? stowed away on a ship at Genoa and arrived in Scotland at the age of 14. he is on the 1851 census at Biggar aged 15.
If he arrived at a Scottish port I wonder if he could slip into the country and just tell people that he is a British subject as many do today.

We believe he went to Biggar as there was already Italians living there, they were not on the 1851 Biggar Census. I am trying to find where they came from.

On the NA naturalisation list there is only one name that looks like John Lando, he is John Albini but he registered in 1845. I will get a copy to check if not I will go to the NA.

Hello! I've just stumbled on this thread and I was wondering if anyone might be able to help.
I'm a student at the University of Edinburgh. I'm doing a research project on Italian language maintenance among the Scotsitalian community and on its role in shaping the identity of successive generations of Italian immigrants.
If you're a Scotsitalian (no matter whether you speak Italian or not) or have Italian ancestors (no matter how remote they may be) and think you could spare 5 minutes (honestly, it won't take more than that) to fill up a questionnaire I would be very grateful. Please send me a private message and I'll forward the questionnaire to you
Thanks a lot
Katia
