Shields Daily News 19 October 1881, page 3

SAD AND FATAL ACCIDENT IN THE STREET

On Sunday night, shortly after ten o'clock, information wasreceived at the North Shields Police Court to the effect that a man named Patrick Jennings had fallen down the Shakespeare Stairs, foot of Howard Street and had seriously injured himself. Inspector Phillips and Detective Anderson proceeded to the house and found Jennings lying on the floor, bleeding profusely from the head and apparently in a dying condition. Dr Bates was immediately summoned and he dressed the man's wounds, giving not the least hope of the man's recovery. Jennings died at half past three o'clock this morning. He was a labourer and of the age of 45 years. An inquest will be held on the body. On the 16th of July last, Jenning's wife fell downstairs and died. An inquest was held on the body, and a verdict was returned to the effect that she died from a fracture to the skull, but how she received it there was no evidence to show.

Mary's inquest was reported in the same newspaper 19 Jul 1881, page 4.
I don't have time just now to transcribe it for you just now but will do later.

It mentions she fell downstairs at the Magnesia Bank, Olive Street and she was the wife of Patrick Jennings, a labourer.

So that's why no one can find them in the census returns after 1881
