Lofthouse in Sowerby 1851

Would love to see the full 1851 census entry for John Lofthouse who was living in Sowerby near Thirsk with wife Jane and family.

John Lofthouse was born 1800 in Bagby and Jane was born about 1799 in Borrowby. Think sons Mark, Henry and Thomas were also in the household.

That's great.
I find his occupation a bit odd. I thought collier meant coal miner but there are no mines anwhere near Sowerby, Thirsk. I think he was actually just selling coal.

Might not be coal mining.  There were iron mines and lead mines in and around that area.   Alum mining on the coast etc.   Not sure what there was in Sowerby but it might be worth looking just to check.   Local directories might give an indication of what there was.

I grew up in Thirsk and I don't have any recollection of mines but I suppose they may have closed well before I was born!!

But John's son was a coal merchant so I rather suspect the ennumerator got his definitions wrong.

My Great Great Great Grandfather was Henry Lofthouse (according to info I have found anyway).

I'm thinking that this is the same Henry Lofthouse, because he married a lady named Mary (they ended up having around 9 kids or something), in Sowerby, and one of their children was Stephen Lofthouse, who I have a picture of (my great great grandfather).  He is sat on a horse and cart, and on the cart is the words "Stephen Lofthouse, Coal Leader, Sowerby"  (It may say loader, but the writing is hard to read).  Stephen also married in Sowerby, and I have his daughter's marriage certificate (in digital format - ie. scanned and sent to me, so it's all falling apart and a bit hard to read) with Sowerby York, and Stephen's name and occupation on it. 

It would be great to get in touch and swap info!!!
