Thanks Angie I cant explain how excited this is making me feel my brother lives in the USA and I have spoken with him last night so he is also wanting to get started with me.

As I said I am a complete novice so I Dont know if you could help me out again by telling me where I can look to get the follolwing information about my family

How can I find the parents of Mary E Waymark born about about 1844 who was the wife of Walter W Butler born about 1846 (I noticed that on the cencus for 1881 walter and mary e butler had a nurse wrok for them who was Emma A waymark who was 14 and wondered if she was a relative of Mary.

How can I also find the parents of Matha born about 1809 who married Walter Butler who was born about 1811.

Angie this is so interestering to actually find out history that goes back before waterloo this is a whole new world to me my evenings will not be boring now thanks again.

If you look at the top of the Beginners' Board there are tips about how and where to search.   www.familysearch.org is a site that has many baptisms and marriages taken from parish records as well as the 1881 census.   If you are prepared to pay www.ancestry.co.uk has other census years 1851 - 1901.
From 1837 on you should be able to find Birth, Marriage and Death reocrds and buy the certificates.   Before that you need to search parish registers so it is more difficult.   Do check the tips on the board.   Good luck.  You will be hooked now!

Hi well

the best way to go about it for parents and going further back will be to order the marriage certificate for Walter W and his wife Mary E Waymark that will give you their father's names then we can try to get a little further. Birth certificates for walter w and Mary e waymark will give you the father's name and mother's maiden name so this then helps us look for a marriage it is a little confusing at first but you won't be a novice for long I recomend getting a good family tree programme to record all your information in so that you don't need to keep going back and fro with paperwork.

Welcome to Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards

AngiO

Sorry to butt in here, but a few inaccuracies have crept into your lookup for penny.

Om my copy of the 1851 census; the head of the family in 1851 is WILLIAM, not Walter, the age of Jane A is 13, not 14; Elizabeth is shown as 2 (no age quoted on your lookup) and I think you will find it is Springham, not Spring Lane.

The reference for the 1851 census (not quoted) is:

HO107/ 1638/ Folio 216/ Page 74 - Springham, Hellingly

Your 1841 census information

HO107/ 1114/ 11 - Spring Ham, Hellingly

BUTLER William, 30, Farmer
............  Martha, 30
............  Frederick, 4
............  Jane, 3
............  Maria, 1
Bennet William, 30, Ag Lab
Johnson Caroline, 25, Female Servant
Rollason Sarah, 11, Female Servant

All born in county of Sussex.

NB. Ages on the 1841 census only were rounded down to the nearest 5 for everyone over the age of 15 - so William could have been 31, 32, 33 or 34
