CRUMPTON/CROMPTON and KEEPAX in Bristol
« on: Friday 18 November 05 15:50 GMT (UK) »
I have not had a chance to look at the CRUMPTON/CRUMPTON name very much at all, so I'm looking for some advice with research in the Bristol area.  I've looked at several local family history sites without much success....

I'm looking for info on the baptism of Mary CRUMPTON, who was born around about 1816, possibly slightly earlier, somewhere in Bristol.  She only appears on 2 censuses, the 1861 defines the place further as St Phillips, Bristol.

All that I know of her is that she married Thomas KEEPAX.  He was from the Worcester area, but I can find no record of their marriage in Worcestershire - is there any marriage index available for Gloucs.?  Their first child, also Thomas, was born in Temple Street, Bristol, 2 Sept 1839 - he did not survive infancy.  Their later children were all born in Worcester, the oldest of these in 1847.

Where did they go between 1839 and 1847.  Is there a way to look at the Bristol 1841 census online, or on CD? Thomas and Mary were pipemakers, I understand this occupation was associatied with the Temple area.

Looking forward to any suggestions,
Jenna

From Roger Price's work on Bristol pipemakers:

KEEPASE, Mary

Her parentage is unknown.

c1816      She was born in Bristol (Alvey & Gault,1979,410).

pre1841      Mary married, but no details of the wedding have yet been found and the name of her husband is unknown.  Nor is it known whether she married in Bristol or elsewhere (Alvey & Gault,1979, 410).

c1841-51   Mary Keepase was working as a pipemaker in Worcester (Alvey & Gault,1979,410).

Most likely she worked for Hardwick & Longford in that city; but there is no evidence that she had ever worked as a pipemaker in Bristol (Alvey & Gault,1979,409).

Thanks so much Peter, interesting information.

In the years following my original post, I have made a little progress, which I'll now update if I may, just in case any other nuggets like this appear (she says, hopefully!).

Mary CRUMPTON/CROMPTON married Thomas KEEPAX (b. 1810, Claines, Worcestershire) on 30 April 1835, at St. Peter's, Leeds, West Yorkshire.  No sign of any children for them in that area, and I have absolutely no clue what they were doing there, as Thomas' family has no known connection to the Kippax and variant families which do occur in Yorks/Lancs.  How long they stayed in Leeds, and if they went anywhere else before moving back to Bristol for their son's birth in 1839 is not yet known.

The most likely CRUMPTON family for Mary to belong to seems to me to be that of John Crumpton and Mary (FOOTMAN), who can be found living in the St. Philip & St. Jacob area on various censuses.  The men of the family tend to be ropemakers, the women pipemakers.  But I can find nothing to PROVE Mary's connection to them, just a hunch right now.

Thanks for taking the time to post the information about Mary, it really is much appreciated,
Jenna :-)
