1891 york census look up
« on: Wednesday 16 November 05 14:00 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help please??

I am looking for Thomas Croft and family, he was born in 1864 in Staveley, North Yorkshire.  In 1901 he is living in York, so im not sure if he is there in 1891 or Staveley.

Any help would be much appriciated.

Hi there
Looked for and found your Thomas Croft on the 1901 and 1881 census. Looked high and low for him under every conceivable name on the 1891 but no success
Did he marry Mary Bean? She was in Bilton Harrogate in the 1891 census so if they married in Malton in 1893 he must be somewhere near Harrogate/ Knaresborough in 1891 I should think
All the best

Hi

Thanks for looking for me, did you find a marriage for Thomas Croft and Mary Bean?  I didn't know who his first wife was, all i had was the Mary.  If it is them getting married in 93, why Malton, not Knaresborough i wonder.

Just guessing as Slingsby where Mary Bean was born is only about 6 miles west of Malton. Looked on the free BMD for marriages between 1891 and 1894 when Ada was born and this seemed the best match
Had looked for both Mary and Thomas Croft on the 1891 census and not there so checked marriages and then found Mary Bean in the 1891 census at Bilton Harrogate
Could Thomas have been married to anyone else before the marriage to Mary and lied about his place of birth?
He was nearly 30 when he married her?
What a puzzle!
Best wishes
