Hello again Bryant

on the 1851 census George is living with:

William Cook 1809 Ufford - Head
Sarah 1822 Bewdley - Wife
John 1834 Hollesley - Son (although unlikely to be Sarah's)
Benjamin 1837 Hollesley - Son (ditto above but possible)
Betsey 1847 Hollesley - Daughter
George Cooper 1828 Ramsholt - Inmate?? but occupation Shoemaker

On the 1841 census I have found a George Cooper - aged 16, plus an Edward Cooper aged 13 living with the Spall family in Boyton.  Do you know if that is near to Ramsholt, Shottisham, etc?

Regards
Marilyn

Boyton is about 5 miles from the "circle" going east up the coast.

1841
Street, Hollesley, Suffolk
William Cook  30  shoe m  Y
Sarah      "      30               Y
George    "      10               Y
John        "       7                Y
Benjamin "       3                Y
-------------------

I think you need to find this family in 1851 as I firmly believe Edward is the father and the one who died sometime between 1841-1854 when George Cooper married Harriet Wright!

1841..........BAWDSEY, SUFFOLK............HO107/1041/2
EDWARD COOPER  40 SHOPKEEPER  Y
MARY          "           30                       Y
ELLEN         "           12                       Y
HARRIET      "           11                       Y
ALFRED       "            8                        Y
BETSEY       "             1                        Y

* and he is the only Edward Cooper in Bawdsey, Suffolk*

*BAWDSEY, ALDERTON, BOYTON, HOLLESLEY, RAMSHOLT, SHOTTISHAM all come under WOODBRIDGE as a Registration District.

Researching names BRYANT (Camberwell), PASTERFIELD (Essex and all), RAY (Holborn/Islington areas back to Brentford), POWELL (Glouc & beyond?)
Fletcher (Glouc into Warwickshie into Lancs?), BUCKLEY (Chatham area), Watson (Chatham area).

Hello Marilyn

I have been watching your topic with much interest as I also have a Cooper that I cannot trace back, who came from the same area.

Robert Cooper (born 1823 Ramsholt).  I have traced his marriage, children and all generations onwards but cannot find anything for his birth/parents/siblings.

On all censuses I had seen, Robert lists his birthplace as Ramsholt and I have searched Ramsholt baptism registers extensively for mention of him and have drawn a blank (I also searched surrounding parishes of Alderton, Shottisham and Bawdsey with no luck).

I have not been able to find him in 1841.  By 1851 he was married with one child aged 11 months, and living in Ramsholt (although his daughter's birthplace is Alderton).  He was not living in Ramsholt in 1841.

This week I saw the 1861 census, and Robert lists his birthplace not as Ramsholt, but Boyton, but I have not had chance to look at Boyton PRs and nor will probably have the opportunity to do so for some time to come  :(.

It seems a coincidence that we are both searching for Coopers in this area, and a slight possibility that George and Robert might be brothers!

I don't really have any helpful information to offer you I'm afraid, but will watch this space with interest!

If I do find anything more I'll post a reply.

Kind regards
Anne

Hello Anne, it's very frustrating isn't it?  This is some other information I have found out.  Not sure if it's connected to either of us but looks interesting.

On the 1841 census I found a Susan Cooper aged 30 with a daughter Harriet aged 7.  They were living in Bawdesy with two other widows and their families.

On the 1851 census Susan was aged 43 born in Bawdsey and Harriet aged 17 born in Ramsholt.  Living in East Street, Bawdsey.

On 1861 census Susan is now shown as aged 56, Harriet is aged 27, also a widow now named Smith with two children both born in Bawdsey.  They are living in Alderton Street, Alderton.

It's quite possible I suppose that Susan is your Robert's mother, given the area.  I know that on 1841 census it looks like she could be too young (born 1811) but by the time we get to the 1861 census her birth year is 1805 which would make it feasible.  She could also be my William's mother but how we ever get to prove it remains to be seen.  I guess the parish records are the answer.  I do know that William's father, Edward, died before 1854 but that's about it.

If I find out anything more I will be in touch.   Good luck.

Regards
Marilyn

Hello Marilyn

I have some information from Ramsholt and Butley parish registers, but none that I could see which tied into my Robert Cooper's family, but it might be of interest to you.

You are so right about this being frustrating!  I have seen PR (fiche) of Robert's marriage at Records Office. but the name of his father is so faded it is impossibe to decipher  >:(

I will send you a PM about the information I have.

Kind regards
Anne
