Look up for Shoreditch 1841 please
« on: Sunday 13 November 05 21:46 GMT (UK) »
Hello folks,
I'm not having much luck with my last posts and so I thought that I would take a liberty and see if I can find this family that I have in 1851

1851 census
5a Grays Buildings
Shoreditch
Matthew Carey Head aged 48 Bricklayers labourer born Ireland
Ellen Carey Daughter aged 20 born St. Lukes Middx Chip box maker
Thomas Carey Son aged 10 born Shoreditch

Hopefully there will be a wife in 1841 as Thomas Carey is born around then

Thankyoy very much
Brenda

Hi Brenda, the address in 51 is 5a Guys Buildings. This is for anyone who looks the address up in 41 for you.

Hi Ken.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post.
I do believe that the address is as my original post Grays rather than Guys Bldgs.
I looked at the previous census pages and it did look more like Grays.
I did a Google search and came up with quite a few Grays and only one Guys Buildings in Shoreditch.
I think that the single mention of Guys was a misread census by a fellow researcher.
I will of course attempt to find a mention in 1841 at both these named places.
Regards
Brenda

Hi Brenda,I looked at the census, and it is Guys. I also checked the name in the East of London Family History Society book. That shows Cary at Guys Buildings,St Leonards,Shoreditch. Also if you look on the census street index, you will only see Guys Bldgs.

Hello Ken,
Thank you for helping out with this.  I must say that I am totally confused (as usual with this ancestor hunting)
I've had another Google and the mentions of Grays Bldgs do appear to be posts from people querying the address.
I wonder where in Shoreditch the buildings were.  According to the census quite close to Kingsland road. I wonder if I could get hold of some old maps.  I go to Hackney frequently and I reckon maybe either the Hackney Archives or library may have a record of Guys buildings.

If you go to www.motco.com and search the index for Red Lion Street 11-16 that is where guys Bldgs was. It was placed at 145 Kingsland road, unfortunately it doesn't show on the map. The1841 ref is HO107/709  1  F 15-16

Thanks Ken,
I went to Kingsland Rd today and got an idea of the area where the buildings were.
