1861 Census/ Jane Graham
« on: Saturday 12 November 05 15:17 GMT (UK) »
Looking for Jane Graham, daughter of William and Jane Graham.
Mother of Robert William Stanley Graham, born 1869 in Kirklinton, Cumberland.( 1891 Census) West Linton Village

Robert living in the Nelson home at age of 2 as Nurse child and living in grandparents home (William and Jane ) at the age of 12. Can't find any information regarding his mother Jane. On birth certificate states father unknown.

Could someone please check 1861 census to see if Jane is on there or maybe death information as she may have died shortly after Roberts death.

On the 1891 census there is a Sybil 26 Kirklinton, Cumberland (daughter) I am wondering if this could be Sybil "Jane".

Hello,
I was interested to see your post as I am researching the Graham family of Kirklinton too.
       My lot are as follows
John Graham m. Ann Scott 5th July 1796 Kirklinton  according to the IGI
   Children were
          Dinah christened 1800
          Richard 1802
          Jane 1804
          Ann 1806
          Elizabeth 1808
          William 1810
         Edward 1813
My family descends from Jane who married William ANGUS, at St Cuthbert's , Carlisle, in  1831
Could my own Jane Graham's brother William be a possible match for your William, father of your Jane Graham?
A slight difference in age, and the Grahams are legion, but what do you thinK?
                           Happy hunting
                                            Jane

On second thoughts
This seems to be Charlies girl's family in  1851, and William is the wrong age for my William. Shame!,

I am trying to find the following:
William Graham aged 27, son of Thomas Graham married Jane Copeland (24) daughter of William Copeland were married 4 March 1854 Wetheral Parish Church.
I know that Jane was born about 1829, baptised 29 Nov 1829 Wetheral, daughter of William Copeland and Elizabeth Pugmire.
However have been unable to pin down the correct William Graham and cannot trace either of them for certain in 1861 census onwards.
Any help gratefully received.

I, too, am looking for information on a Jane Graham, wife of a William Graham, the mother of a family born in Kirklinton. A search, incidentally, which brought me to this page.

The 1861 Census has them living at Wain Hill, Hethersgill, as follows:

William Graham, Head, abt 1818, b Kirklinton
Jane Graham, Wife, abt 1823, b Scotland
Thomas Graham, Son, abt 1848, b Kirklinton
Mary Graham, Daughter, abt 1850, b Kirklinton
David Graham, Son, abt 1853, b Kirklinton
Jane Graham, Daughter, abt 1855, b Kirklinton
Sarah Graham, Daughter, abt 1857, b Kirklinton
Margaret Graham, Daughter, abt 1859, b Kirklinton

My line is through the daughter Mary Graham but, after many attempts, I have failed to locate her birth certificate. Therefore my focus, at the moment, is on the maiden surname of her mother, Jane Graham which should help me (a) with the marriage certificate for William and Jane, and (b) Mary's birth certificate. Can anyone assist?

Thanx and seasonal greetings

I think you need to find them on the 1851 census ... there was a widowed William GRAHAM aged 33 at Hethersgill in 1851 ... if that was the William, then he probably wasn't actually the father of Thomas and Mary.

Hi Geoff

Thanks for the tip. I now have evidence which suggests that what you say could well be true.

The 1851 Census has a William Graham household living at Cocklet Hill, Hethersgill, as follows:

William Graham, Head, Widower, abt 1818, b Kirklinton
John Graham, Son, abt 1845, b Halton
William Graham, Son, abt 1846, b Kirklinton

and also under the same roof are:

Ann Gordon, Servant, abt 1816, b Kirkandrews
Thomas Gordon, Lodger, abt 1848, b Kirklinton
Mary Gordon, Lodger, abt 1850, b Kirklinton

At this point, the birth years and birth places of William Graham (Snr), Thomas Gordon and Mary Gordon in the 1851 Census all match the pattern in the 1861 Census of  William Graham, Thomas Graham and Mary Graham. But suggesting, at this point, that Thomas and Mary Gordon became Thomas and Mary Graham is obviously speculation.

However, I now have an interesting development in the form of the Birth Certificate for Sarah Graham who appears on the 1861 Census as the daughter of William and Jane Graham, and the sister of Thomas and Mary Graham. Sarah Graham was born at Cocklet Hill, Hethersgill, on 25 Dec 1856. Her father is William Graham and her mother is Jane Graham (formerly Lidderdale).

Notice that Sarah was born at Cocklet Hill, which is precisely where William Graham, Thomas Gordon and Mary Gordon were living in the 1851 Census. We move from speculation to possibility.

My hunt is now on for the Marriage Certificate of William Graham and Jane Lidderdale, but where do I go to find possible adoption papers for Thomas Gordon and Mary Gordon?

Any further suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanx and have a good New Year
