1841 Islington Look Up Please
« on: Tuesday 31 August 04 02:01 BST (UK) »
Hi! I don't half get confused by county boundaries - but I'm hoping Islington is in Middx for the 1841?!!

I'm searching for a PRIOR family as follows:

Benjamin PRIOR b. abt 1779 , Woodstock, Oxon Letter Carrier
Elizabeth Prior b. abt 1780, Cheapside City
Richard Prior b. 1821, Hoxton/Shoreditch
Mary Ann Prior b. 1824       "

Any info gratefully received.

Thanks

Hello Bryant!

V. Excited to receive your reply - been battling with this one for ages But it looks like a pretty good match - although I know Benjamin was born in Woodstock, Oxfordshire - but ages etc all correct - and Benjamin was a letter carrier so I would imagine a Sup postn - whatever that is, is related!

I don't suppose you have a census ref no. do you?

Thank you very much

Louise

Thanks very much again - I shall get a copy.

Think the posties of the time must have been well rewarded - Benjamin ended up being pretty well off and a 'Gentleman' on a future census!!

With all your experience, Bryant, do you know if there is anywhere specific where I might be able to find further info about victorian careers with the post?

Thanks - Louise

Louise

It isn't specific, just general..........undoubtably you will come across books that would be specific.........at a price

A search engine is a great tool!

I use yahoo (use any)...............input ... Victorian postmen
You will soon get an insight into the uniform and how they went about their life & work

Have fun

Hi

I'm descended from Kate Constance Prior (b. 11/7/1871), Woodstock. She was a housemaid in Paddington when she met her husband Samuel Johnson.

See: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/3815175/TRAVELL for more information on the Priors.

I live in Whitechapel but am from Sheffield originally.
