Hello Gary
Welcome to rootschat. I dont think i can help you on this one. Looking for a burial is like looking for needle in a haystack :) when there is no information to go on. Each council cemetery is on its own film. Then split into years on another film. Then you have different religions, again on different films. The good news is :) if Joseph died in wallasey in 1895 (have you checked the free B.M.D) That means he wont be in Landican,Plymyard,Frankby, or Flaybrick. Because they werent open then,so that narrows  it down to Rake Lane (opened 1883) What churchyards there are in wallasey seem to have been very small. The biggest and oldest being St Mary's. So if you can do a bit of rooting on the B.M.D sites and find his death year. You will find where the death was registered. Or ask for some census lookups and see if you can close the gap a bit. Then again he could have gone home to Stafford. Get back to me if you get anymore information and i will see what i can do
sorry this is so long but it's the only way

Hi Gary
I will be going to the library Next week,if not sooner,to do a directory lookup for another member. So as i have only one year to look up,i will check and see if i can find  an address for your Joseph Hancock. If he does appear in the directories i will do a track search. If i find anything i will posts it on the
Lookup request board on the top of the page.So it doesn't get lost :) plus this is a burial lookup page,(like to keep them separate)

Hello Celia,
Thank you for the replies and your generous offer of help. I have to admit that I thought it might be a long shot, but as so many people seem to be investigating relatives in Rake Lane via your thread, I was wondering if by chance anyone had spotted him. A Joseph Hancock, 63 is listed in the deaths for Liverpool in the June quarter of 1895, but I have not yet got around to getting that certificate - I am chasing other people at the moment. But, as I will be going to Liverpool soon, I thought it would be a good opportunity to see if I could find him. I don't know if the GRO 'Liverpool' tag places him in Wallasey, but the story is that he was buried in the village. The parish church was my first thought, but the family were methodists, so my mind turned to Rake Lane, especially as so many of those buried there were old sailors.

I would be very grateful if you could see if you could spot him if it's not too much trouble. Any indication of where he lies would save me a lot of legwork when I am up there. I'm hoping for a fulsome, wordy gravestone if he is there, that will resolve some family ties ... well, I can dream. ;D

Again, many thanks,

Gary

Hi Gary
I am not sure what you mean by "I wonder if anyone has spotted him" Most of the people that ask me for help in finding a grave.Know that they are buried in Rake lane,if they have a year of death.I can then get the Rake lane film thats covers that year and religion.I then find the burial, and the plot and grave number.I then visit Rake Lane and hopfully take a photo of it plus inscription. if the stone is still standing. Then i send it to the Customer ;D  (must higher my fee's ;D ;D) None of these people live in the north west, most are in the south,or in Canada, New Zealand,Australia, and America. The latter descendent's of relatives  Grandparents or G.grandparents buried in the cemeteries. So no one here would spot your Joseph.
I am not sure what to do now in regard to a look up,you say Joseph died in liverpool. So the death is registered in liverpool. So do you think he lived in wallasey but died while working in liverpool. The library now charge for using the machines (now i cant use then as many times a week as i did)..Not that i mind as long as i have a few lookups to do at the same time, and i can use it for other things as well. But without definite information one look up at a time and not finding anything, well you you know ;) so that is why i want to find out if  Joseph lived in Liverpool or wallasey first. If Josephs last job had been a merchant seaman. he might have been on my other rake lane topic for just merchant navy, but it wasn't so he isn't ;D Will See if i can find him anyway. Have you asked for the 1891 census for Cheshire. To see where he was living then,if he isnt on the cheshire census ask for the lancashire one. Then your nearly there.Problem solved. You might not need to go traipsing round liverpool. Just ask RootsChat ;D ;D

Hello Celia,
Well, I have looked up Joseph Hancock on the 1891 census. Yes, he did live in Birkenhead, he and his wife and a domestic servant lived at 70 Bridge Street (I think -  the street name is hard to read), but it is the right man, born in 'Steke-on-Trent' (sic), married to Susanna. Having looked up the one Bridge street in Birkenhead, it seems a distance from Wallasey, but parish boundaries can be pretty wide. If he still worked for Andrew Gibson  - a Liverpool firm of shippers - he may well have been in Liverpool on business and died there.

Thank you Gary
i can now look for him in Birkenhead, not wallasey,As i only have your lookup to do now.I will track back up from 1891, then back down from it.Will check back in with any results tomorrow.I should realy put any finding on the request board below the offers one.But it might confuse you.and its my fault anyway ;D,but if you want anymore lookups in the directories in the future .I have the offer at the top of rootschat Cheshire page. So post in the request page, then i will find it.

Hi Gary
As i said i tracked back, he wasn't in the 1890,or the year before so stopped there.I don't know if this is the same Joseph,at a different address,so i took it just in case.
1891 Hancock. Joseph, Master marina,7 Neville Road, Waterloo,W
1892
Hancock. Joseph Ship Store Dealer (Heath & Co) 70 Bridge Street Birkenhead.same in 1893, books4,5,& 6 not found. He was not in the 1897. I went back 1882 and had a look under Shipping Traders, and found under Shipowners
Gibson. A.& Co 4 & 6 King St .W. It didn't say which King St there is one in wallasey as well. With it having King St W though its probably liverpool. hope this is of some help.

Hello Celia,
Thanks for the information and indeed for spending the time looking it up, it was very good of you. Yes, it's a great help. The reference to Joseph as a ships store dealer tallies with what I could (just barely) read on the 1891 census return, though Heath and Co are a mystery to me, so that's another angle to follow up. I suppose he must have given up working for Gibson and Co some time before, though he has always been a rather shadowy figure to track down, so this latest developement does not come as a complete surprise. Whilst in Liverpool I hope to go and examine the Customs Bills of Entry at the Maritime Museum there, if he was a ship's merchant in his later years, as this new info seems to indicate he or his employers may get a mention.

As to his burial, I think I might take a trip to Birkenhead to take a look around and see where he lived and perhaps pop into some of the smaller graveyards to have a look around. Perhaps something of a wild goose chase on my part, but it can be quite pleasant to while away an afternoon in that fashion, especially after going over dusty old documents of a morning.

Anyhow, again, do please except my thanks for your help on this matter. If I do find anything more of interest I'll post it here.
