Braby Family in Australia
« on: Monday 30 August 04 11:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,
There are quite a few Braby's in Oz, some are descended from 3 brothers who came from London in the mid 19th century. these include Henry (b1849?) who emigrated in 1866, and settled in  Townsville and Ayr in Northern Queensland, and was an Engineer with the Colonial Suger Refinery, Then there was Martin (1853-1931) who also lived in North Qld. and was a farmer, Then there was Frederick Luff  (1855-1928), my Great-Grandfather. Not sure when he emigrated, possible when he was a very young man. He had about 12 children, two wifes, and lots of descendants, who are trying to pick up the threads of the past!
They were all sons of James Braby, who was an inland revenue collector of Lamb Lane, Hackney.  James was married to Caroline Luff in 1842 in Kirdford, Sussex. James was the son of James and Sarah (nee Carpenter) Braby who were also married in Kirdford, in 1799. Not sure but this James may have been also the son of John Braby and Ann Pollard who were married in Wisborough Green, Sussex, in 1777. (Both Wisborough and Kirdford are near Billinghurst, and very pretty little localities these days).
What I would be interested in is if any other descendants  of the Sussex Brabys in England or Australia wish to exchange information, and may be able to flesh out the Braby family in England. Also was there a family link to Frederick Braby of Bristol and Glasgow who were steel merchants in the late 19th century up to the 1960's (there is still a Braby Group listed as rainwater goods manufacturers)?

Another Roots Chatter is trying to reunite families with old photos he has found of their ancestors.  He is looking for a Wm Braby:

"Wm Braby whose photo was taken in Sydney, Australia, offers a slightly better chance given that he was apparently aged 2½ in 1892"'.

I realize that William Braby was born:
18655/1881  BRABY  WILLIAM NICHOLL  FREDERIC  RACHAEL  MURRURUNDI

Please reply if interested, perhaps the 1892 is wrong?

Some more information about Henry, and his engineering ability.

Seems he was quite an inventor, and had to argue with the Americans about a steam generator, which they claimed as theirs.

The initial post is ten years old so I am unsure if the person will even receive our responses? I am also trying a tree on Ancestry to help find a descendant of the person in the photo. I will direct the person who has the photo to this thread :)

I'm afraid that I have just had to make a very grovelling apology to Nova67 by PM.

I have just looked very closely at the inscription on the reverse of the photograph I am trying to reunite.  It seems that what I interpreted as a "W" is actually a badly written "Ev".  The squiggle I thought was an "m" (giving "Wm" for William) is an "a".  Thus we have Eva Braby and not Wm Braby.  The record I was looking for is:

759/1890 BRABY EVA  ERNEST  MINNIE A  SYDNEY

Now that we have positively ID'd the sitter in this photograph, can anybody prove their descent from her?  After the way I have inadvertently maligned poor little Eva, it would be a great shame if I cannot send her home.  Meanwhile, I'd better bring forward the next appointment with the Optician!

Thanks for the PM, YourAncestors.  We seem to have sabotaged this thread and I am not sure if we shouldn't start a new one with a link to this one?
I shall try my old tricks for finding a home for Eva!  Including trees on Ancestry.
Please scan in any inscription.  I had a very embarrassing time on the Deciphering and Recognition part of the forum recently!  It is easy to misinterpret.
I must admit I was baffled by the 2 1/2 in 1892!  I had also considered that the child could have been born in 1892.
On to Eva now.....
