Hi,
There are quite a few Braby's in Oz, some are descended from 3 brothers who came from London in the mid 19th century. these include Henry (b1849?) who emigrated in 1866, and settled in Townsville and Ayr in Northern Queensland, and was an Engineer with the Colonial Suger Refinery, Then there was Martin (1853-1931) who also lived in North Qld. and was a farmer, Then there was Frederick Luff (1855-1928), my Great-Grandfather. Not sure when he emigrated, possible when he was a very young man. He had about 12 children, two wifes, and lots of descendants, who are trying to pick up the threads of the past!
They were all sons of James Braby, who was an inland revenue collector of Lamb Lane, Hackney. James was married to Caroline Luff in 1842 in Kirdford, Sussex. James was the son of James and Sarah (nee Carpenter) Braby who were also married in Kirdford, in 1799. Not sure but this James may have been also the son of John Braby and Ann Pollard who were married in Wisborough Green, Sussex, in 1777. (Both Wisborough and Kirdford are near Billinghurst, and very pretty little localities these days).
What I would be interested in is if any other descendants of the Sussex Brabys in England or Australia wish to exchange information, and may be able to flesh out the Braby family in England. Also was there a family link to Frederick Braby of Bristol and Glasgow who were steel merchants in the late 19th century up to the 1960's (there is still a Braby Group listed as rainwater goods manufacturers)?
