John Hann - born c1793 Preston Plucknett

My ancestor John Hann was born about 1793 in Preston Plucknett according to census records.  I am trying to confirm who his parents were so any help would be much appreciated.

I notice there are a Richard and Jane Hann in Preston Plucknett in 1841 & 51.  Richard was 80 and from Montacute, Somerset according to the 1851 census, Jane was from Preston, Somerset and 66(so would be too young to be John Hann's mother).

Hi Catherine,

Thanks for the information from the IGI.  I understand that there is some question regarding the authenticity of the IGI on this information as it has not come directly from the parish records (it is independently submitted which may or may not be accurate).  I would be interested to hear if there is any source information (eg. christening record) to back up the IGI on John's parentage.

My John Hann gave his age as 60 on the 1851 census (which would give his year of birth 1790/91 (sorry).  He was married to Rachel(age 63) from Thornford, Dorset in 1851.

That same record does mention their marriage - Rachel Bugler or Ragless??  Date - 11th November 1816, Thornford, Dorset.

Maybe someone from the area could confirm/discount these member submitted records, with parish record lookups.....

Hi,

the parents of John were John and Esther Hann, there is no certain marriage date as the registers no longer exist. John was christened 30th Jan 1796, born 18th Dec 1795. My ancestor Robert was his elder brother, and witness at his wedding!

Many Thanks for your response.  Is there any doubt that my John Hann and the brother of your Robert are the same?  I have John Hann as 60 in 1851 which would give a slightly earlier year of birth c1791 but guess he could have given his age as slightly older as his wife was older.  It is interesting that Robert was a witness at John's marriage - do you know of any other witness?

Did Robert Hann stay in Preston Plucknett?

HI,

there isn't much doubt as to your John's date of birth. There were a number of siblings too. One brother was Charles, he eventually ended up in Milborne Port and his daughter Kezia married John's son Henry. Robert Hann moved into Yeovil itself with his wife and family, he is on the 1841 census. However we now know that they moved to London before 1851 and I have Ann's death cert witnessed by Robert's sister. My Ancestor was his son Frederick who also went to Milborne Port.

I have done a lot of research on this branch of the Hanns and would be happy to share. There are a number of researchers looking at the Thornford branch, mostly descendants of the brothers who went to Australia.
