Which prison???

In 1904 my g/grandfather was court martialed, discharged from the RN & sentenced to 1 year's hard labour.  This took place in Devonport (where he was also born).  Does anyone know where he would have been sent to "do his time"?  Did the Navy have their own jails or would he just have been sent to the nearest one?  Any pointers gratefully received.

Hello Annie
His service record just says "CM 14.1.04 - to be imprisoned with HL for 12 months & dismissed HM Service."  The CM was held on board theConqueror at Devonport although my GGF, Able Seaman John Henry Tyson was serving at the time on the Magnificent where the offence took place.  I think there was/is a prison in Plymouth, which would have been nearest, but don't know if the Navy used specific prisons.

My mate has no idea, what prison they would have used.
he thought it was Colchester, they use it now.

I found out a little - not much!

Royal Naval Prison Bodmin
There are other naval prisons, its possible that as he was also dismissed he would be sent to a civilian prison Bodmin had both and also a set of gallows.
Bodmin Goal Now in part a tourist attraction. When it was built in 1778 a model of its kind using the then latest ideas of prison reform. Up to that time prisoners were housed in barbaric conditions in the Cornwall County Gaol within the walls of Launceston Castle. The Gaol acted as a Civilian Prison until 1916, taking its last military prisoner in 1922. soon after the prison was sold and partly demolished, but much of its imposing granite walls remain.

The CM records are available at Kew - do you have those too?  Does it say anything about his discharge and where to -  in the right hand coloum it sometimes says.

Also "Biker " has a posting at the top of the Armed Forces page regarding sentences etc - you could PM him if you don't want to discuss it on line !!

If his service record survived then details - where absconded/mutineered/whatever correspondence re alerting police etc might be on file.
Some locations also published lists in local newspapers of those that were in trouble  etc -  in the hope that some acquantance knew something and would report it. There may also be a follow up report -  Its a bit of a trawl but its worth looking - if access to such records are easily available to you.
