Thanks Annie for your perseverence!  I have the records from National Archives on line - yes this is him - & also a report from The Times - no info on where he was sent.  Bodmin looks interesting.  Will read what "Biker" has to say.

I know its a long time back of your original posting, came across it when looking for something else, and you may have the answer by now but back in the 1950 [a bit after your relation]I was escort to a stoker that had a prison sentance and then was discharged, we had to take him to Shepton Mallet, which was a tri service prison, hope this is of help.

The use of Colchester as a prison for Royal Navy personel is a very innovation
Kent - Piper, Longley, Colvin,Parks,Baker,Saitt

If he was sent to bodmin goal he would of been in this section of the jail,
To my experience its the scariest part of the whole building, when you enter it your phone battery will just die and there is one cell near the end which always has dead birds in!
I stayed the night here once, you can certainly feel the hairs rise on the back of your neck!
If you visit Cornwall it is a must see.
