Descendants of Richard Trathan
1. Richard Trathan (son of Thomas and Margaret) was baptized January 29, 1815 in Troon, Phillack, Cornwall, England, and buried August 11, 1869 in St Erth, Cornwall, England.
He married (1) Elizabeth Murley Charleston February 19, 1839 in St Erth, Cornwall, England (1 below), daughter of John Charleston and Alice. She was baptized December 18, 1817 in St Erth, Cornwall, England (online index of St Erth church records -- accessible through GENUKI page) and was buried June 15, 1858 in St Erth, Cornwall, England (also from the online index of St Erth register).
He married (2) Elizabeth Matthews, widow, January 10, 1859 in St Erth, Cornwall, England (2 below), daughter of William Woolcock [and Elizabeth Matthews]. She was baptized December 13, 1812 in Crowan, Cornwall, England.
Children of Richard Trathan and Elizabeth Charleston are:
2 i. Thomas Trathan, baptized September 29, 1839 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; buried March 08, 1856 in St Erth, Cornwall, England. (burial record in St Erth index online). On the 1851 census.
3 ii. John Trathan, baptized September 14, 1841 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; buried September 06, 1843 in St Erth, Cornwall, England. (both baptism and burial records in St Erth index online)
4 iii. Elizabeth Ann Trathan, born 1843. (no record of her baptism that I can find, but she is on the 1851 census at Bridge Cellar, St Erth (page 3, household 12) as Elizabeth Ann, age 8, daughter.
5 iv. Samuel Trathan, born apparently March 1843 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; No baptismal record found, but his burial record lists him as 16 months old when he was buried July 14, 1844 in St Erth, Cornwall, England. (see burial index)
6 v. Margaret Ann Trathan, born 1845 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; died October 23, 1845 in St Erth, Cornwall, England. (This doesn't make sense to me because while I didn't find a baptism for her, she is in the census as a 6 year old in 1851, though it lists a "burial" in 1845. It seems possible that the indexer OR the actual record (which I have not examined yet) could have erroneously put her birth in the burial section.)
7 vi. Richard John Trathan, born 1846; (again, I did not find a baptism for Richard, but he was 1 when he was buried May 03, 1847 in St Erth, Cornwall, England. (see St Erth burial indexes online)
8 vii. Prudence Trathan, baptized May 29, 1847 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; buried December 10, 1849 in St Erth, Cornwall, England. (both these are listed in the online index of St Erth)
9 viii. Mary Anna Trathan, baptized June 04, 1849 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; buried January 07, 1861 in St Erth, Cornwall, England. (She is listed as Mary Hannah in her burial record, age 11. In the 1851 census, she is Mary H(l), age 2.
10 ix. Richard Trathan, baptized September 02, 1851 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; buried November 04, 1851 in St Erth, Cornwall, England.
11 x. Prudence Trathan, baptized March 04, 1854.
12 xi. Annie Trathan, baptized December 22, 1855 in St Erth, Cornwall, England; died March 28, 1856 in St Erth, Cornwall, England.
Endnotes:
1. For Richard's first marriage: St Erth Parish records: marriages: P 18, # 36, 19 Feb 1839, Richard Straton , full age, bachelor, labourer, St Erth, son of Thomas Shaton, labourer, to Elizabeth Murley Charleston, spinster, St Erth, dau of John Charleston, labourer, wit: Samuel Trevaskis and Mary Anne Hayes. (this I have verified on the microfilm from the LDS family history library. While it was indexed Shaton, it looks like Straton to me.)
2. For Richard's second marriage: St Erth Parish records,, P 166, # 332, 10 January 1859, Richard Trathan, widower, of Churchtown [St Erth], 46, labourer, son of Thomas Trathan, labourer, to Elizabeth Matthews, widow, of Churchtown [St Erth], 45, dau of William Woolcock, miner. by Frederick Hockin, rector of Phillack. Wit: The sign of Stephen [X] Woolcock, James Rogers. (this I have also verified on the microfilm from the LDS family history library).
While Richard's age is a little 'off' I am sure this is the same man. He is in the census of 1861 as well, but died in 1869 "age 56."
I have kept a standardized spelling, Trathan, because that is the way it was clearest on the census and on the second marriage record. The index to St Erth has it a variety of ways -- including Stratton, Traton, Trathen, etc. As it's online you can check it yourself (just do searches for 'tra' or 'tre' or "Richard" and scroll through the options. I may have missed Samuel because I wasn't creative enough!
I don't know what became of any of the children who survived (seems like only one or two may have). I have not found the family (or what was left of it) in 1871, but I haven't looked very hard, either.
Good luck!
ps: I did notice that there seemed to be considerable inter-marrying between Woolcocks and Matthewses. As even the Woococks are peripheral to me (and the Matthews do not figure in, either) I haven't pursued them very far. But I think there are a lot of inter-relationships that I just haven't discovered yet.
