Looking for TRATHEN (TRATHAM)’s who once lived in Phillack (near Hayle, Cornwall) before they moved to Swansea, Wales and changed their family name to STRATTON

Hi Catherine,

I had recently received information on
HO107/1916 Folio 661 Page 44. This is one of the families who moved to Swansea.

However, HO107/1916 Folio 663 Page 48 is new information to me. It closely ties in with the following:

GEORGE TRATHEN & JANE ?
- GEORGE TRATHEN Christening: 24 JAN 1773, Phillack

GEORGE TRATHEN & ELIZABETH ?
-THOMAS WILLIAMS TRATHEN Christening: 02 JUL 1815, Phillack

George Trathen may have been one of the first Trathens born in Phillack. It appears that he was living next door to his son in 1851. Would you have access to the 1841 Census to check if George's wife was still alive?

The 1841 census has, address Trevassack in Phillack:

George Trathan, 65, miner, in county
Elizabeth, 65, ditto.

Living nearby are Edward Trathan, 25, wife Rosamine, 25, daughter Ann, 1, son Thomas, 3M, probably brothers of Edward also in household are William, 20, George, 20, possible sister Caroline, 15.

Margaret Stratton, alias Margaret Trathen of Gulval, spinster, indicted for taking two burthens of furze, value 6d., property of William Stephens: one month in Launceston gaol.


Phillack Marriages on www.uk-genealogy.org.uk show the marriage of George Trathen, soujourner, and Jane Matthews, 6 Dec 1772.  Also Edward Trathen and Ann Barnes, soujourners, 10 April 1812.

Parish records show not only Goerge chrs. 24 Jan 1773 to George and Jane, but a Jane Stratton d.o. George and Jane, 14 April 1775, and a Thomas Stratton son of George and Jane, 18 Sep 1777 (died 12 Jun 1781 as Stratton), Mary Stratton d.o. George and Jane, 31 Dec 1780 (died 6 April 1781 as Stratton), Edward Stratton son of George and Jane, 20 May 1783, Edward Stratton again, 16 May 1785, Mary again, 30 Jun 1786, another Thomas, 14 May 1791, Christopher Stratton, 9 Feb 1795.

Jane Trathan, aged 68, resident Hallen Kene, was buried 1 Oct 1821 in Phillack.  George Trathen, aged 82, resident Trevassack, was buried 22 Feb 1824.  Edward Trathan, aged 44, was buried 27 Dec 1826 (doesn't quite match Edward Stratton, son of George and Jane, but close)

- I think this is the Elizabeth Maria Stratton daughter of George and Elizabeth. She is 30 in the 1841 census (family spelt as 'Trestrail')

Thank you so much for suppling such a large cache of information about the Trachens of Phillack.

My new motto is:

When you're trackin' a STRATTON,
You'll find a Trachen.
And when you're trackin' a TRACHEN,
You'll find a Stratton!

I've been updating the family tree based on this new information. It's a bit of a mystery why the Strattons suddenly decided to go through a name change after 1810. I've heard of this type of clandestine behaviour but I didn't expect to encounter it in my research.

I'm fairly confident that many of the names (STRATTON or TRACHEN) that you provided are directly connected.

Hmmm... a possiblity for George Sr, who must have been b. about 1842, is George Stratten chrs. 13 Jan 1844 Uny Lelant, son of Edward and Jane.  Lelant is across from Phillack (seperated by the River Hayle).  If you look on the IGI you'll see siblings of this George include Edward, Jane, Thomas and Christopher.  Family is Edward Stratton m. Jane Uren.

Some of these have their name spelled 'Strathen'...

George Sr. appears to be the only Stratton who settled in Phillack in the late 1700's. I wouldn't want to speculate as to the whereabouts of George's siblings, given the constant names changes!

In researching a collateral family of mine in St Erth/Crowan, I ran across the marriage of a widow, Elizabeth (nee Woolcock) Matthews, to widower Richard Trathan, in 1858 in St Erth.  Richard was born in Phillack (according to the 1851 census) about 1814.  (I believe he is the one baptised in Phillack in Jan 1815, son of Thomas and Margaret).  Richard's first wife was Elizabeth Charleston.  They were married in St Erth in 1839.  That marriage is indexed under the spelling "Shaton" in the online index of the parish register.  Over the years Richard and Elizabeth had a number of children, variously indexed as Strathen, Straton, Traton, Trathen.  Most of these children died at a very young age. 

From the indexes online of baptisms in Phillack, Richard appears likely to be the elder brother of the Thomas, b 1817, who is the one you have cited in subsequent censuses.  They are probably both the sons of the Thomas (son of George), bapt 1791 in Phillack, but I have not researched this and don't know. 

I would be happy to post the information on Richard and Elizabeth (Charleston) Trathan from the indexes and registers of St Erth if it would be of any use.
