Carshalton marriage 1715
« on: Sunday 06 November 05 17:30 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help with a look up or point me in the right direction? I need info on the marriage of Matt. PELTZAR and Ann CHOUNE, Carshalton 1715. These are the details on IGI and are all I have.

Thanks in anticipation.

I did find the wedding that you referred to and I think that the only way forward or backwards as it were is to order it i am new to all this but how I did for someone else was I phoned 0845 603 7788 and told them the county and they gave me the address to order it from all you will have to do is quote the Batch number etc. Good luck Irret ;)

Hi Martin,
What kind of information were you hoping for?  Usually marriages of this date don't give much detail, other than what you found on the IGI.  You would need to look at the actual parish record to see if there was anything else.  Sometimes the church had a record for banns & if they survived they might reveal something.  If it was by licence, the allegation might have more details.

PS.  Irret, the marriage was in 1715, so there is no certificate, only the entry in the parish records.  Civil registration came into being on July 1 1837, so anything from that date to the present can be ordered.

PPS.  Are you refering to an LDS film?  In which case, that would be another way of viewing the record.

Thank you both. Unfortunately there is nothing else on the IGI record. I don't know which church the marriage took place at or where the records may be kept. Do you have any thoughts, would the LDS film show any more info? I'm particularly interested in details of the parents.

I found this interesting potted history about Carshalton.

http://www.sutton.gov.uk/leisure/heritage/carshalton+history.htm

Checked The Surrey Family History Centre for their parish records holdings & found that the registers for the parish church of Carshalton, All Saints, Carshalton Village, have been transferred to, SUTTON HERITAGE CENTRAL LIBRARY, ST. NICHOLAS WAY, SUTTON.
Baps.  1538-1903
Marrs  1538-1899
Burs  1538-1900

Not having used an LDS film, I'm not sure if it's a copy of the actual records or a transcript, perhaps irret can fill us in?

As I said before, an early record such as 1715, rarely gives parents names or any other information, just the date & the names of the two parties, but you might get lucky :)

The name Peltzar sounds foreign, any ideas on that?

Jane

Thanks Jane, I'll follow up your leads. As far as Peltzer and it's variations go (Peltzar, Speltzer and others) my grandfather was Wilfred Nicholas Speltzer CHOWNE. I'm trying to trace the origin of Speltzer. I have Chownes in Wooburn Bucks during the 1700s and have a copy will of Sarah Peltzer of Wooburn, dated 1780, in which she mentions her cousin Thomas Chowne so it's likely there was a Chowne/Peltzer marriage at some point. I also have a will of John (Johannis) Peltzer of Wooburn from 1702. I think the name may be of Dutch origin. The name died out with my grandfather having been passed down since the 1780s.
