Kay family, Ribchester Area
« on: Sunday 06 November 05 01:40 GMT (UK) »
Looking for descendants of Thomas Kay, (born Ramsgreave 1822) married Mary nee Sharples (born Dilworth 1819), lived at Carr Wood House, Hothersall, near Ribchester, between 1851 and 1881.
Thomas was the son of Elias Kay, another farmer, born Ribchester c.1792 (or possibly 1789, meet my brick wall!)

Children Rodger (b 1847), Ruth (b 1849,), Philis (b 1850), Abel (b 1852), Martha (b 1855), Jabez (b 1857), Elias (b 1859) and Samuel (b 1861).

Rodger married Phoebe Bourne, and farmed in the area, Ruth married John Scott, a postman, and also stayed in the area; Abel became a mason and moved to Whitehaven in Cumbria, Martha married Robert Kerfoot and ended up in Bury. Jabez was my gx3 grandfather, and Samuel and Eli became insurance salesmen in Manchester. All except Phylis had several children

I would be very glad to get in touch with descendants of any of the above, as we have a large album of  photographs c. 1850s - 1900s from the Kay side of the family.  All the photos are digitised, and I would be very happy to share them with anyone who can help identify them!

Have modified the above with new information, still hoping for contacts!
I have transcribed all the records for Kays from the Ribchester St Wilfrid's records, 1589-1837, and would be very glad to hear from anyone researching any Kays from Ribchester, Hothersall, Stydd, Mellor or any of the surrounding areas.

Hi Louise

I have a William Kay in my tree who was born c1820 and gives his place of birth on censuses as either Longridge or Alston, he married a Mary Holden who gives her place of birth as Ribchester, Hurst Green or Stonyhurst.

Do you have any further information that might help me ?

Hi Duck
There is a William baptised 17.11.1822, son of Willam and Nancy; his father is a butcher in Ribchester, though, not Longridge or Alston - the registers seem to be quite specific about the village or hamlet people come from. The records from Longridge St Lawrence and Stydd Chapel, Alston are included in the Ribchester registers, btw.
The only other William anywhere near that time period is in 13.10.1811, the son of William and Mary, of Hothersall.

I couldn't find them among the marriages either. If you like, I could look for Mary Holden's birth for you when I am back at work next week, as I have the registers on microfiche, and can only look at them on the reader there.

If WIlliam's parents were non-conformists, you may be out of luck, as the county record office told me that they have very few non-conformist records for the area, which is a real nuisance, and I've already tried visiting Knowle Green Baptist chapel, where the secretary was extremely helpful, but the register from its foundation to the 1890s has gone missing.

If you haven't already tried them, I've found that the new online Non-comformist records site has a search facility so wide, even on Advanced, that for a common name like Kay it is of no use, unless you are very rich - at £2.50 per record, it's just not possible to check through the list of 10 or 12 hits you get for each search >:(

There is a William Kay (he's down as Gulielmum, not William,) born 14.5.1819, baptised 16.5.1819 at Saint Mary and Saint Michael Roman Catholic Church, Alston, son of Elais and Mary - I found that via the IGI, (batch number P017581) as I also have been searching for a Wiliam Kay from around 1820 amongst the children of Elias and Mary whose births I can't trace - Elais is already a bit of a religious flea, having children baptised both at St Wilfrid's and at Mellor Methodist chapel, depending on where he is farming at the time, but becoming a temporary Roman Catholic sounds a bit far-fetched!
I'll be seeing if I can get a look at the original registers from St Mary & St Michael when I am in the record office again at Easter, so I may find out a bit more about this William. Do you have the marriage certificate for William and Mary, and if so, does it give William's father's name?

Catholic records often use Latin

and the record quoted will probably mean William (Guilielmum)

It is not the correct spelling but I have often found that the
Latin is often corrupted.

Hi Louise

Thanks so much for the information.  I have a feeling about William who was baptised at St Mary & St Michael RC Church, Alston. My William had a son called John Elias b 1855, I also know his Grandchildren were brought up RC

I'll see what information I can find out and let you know.

As a matter of interest I used to live in a house that was used as a secret  meeting place for the catholic population of Alston during the reformation.  It even had a Priest Hole.

Thanks once again

Hi I have a Kay from Ribchester who is a butcher and marries an Elizabeth. They live in Rochdale and have several children. Elizabeth was first married to Richard Halligan. She was born Elizabeth Davies. I am struggling to determine whom his parents were.

Elizabeth is the mother of Mary Kay who happens to be my great grandmother

Hope we can help each other
