Hi searchers

Just  found the link to this collection of photographs - what a great idea to have them available for all.

My gt gt grandfather,  Edward LANCASTER 1823-1883 was a studio photographer who had lived mainly in Chester but also worked at Birkenhead, Llandudno and other resorts. He bagan his work as a portrait artist and moved into  the brand 'new' technique ca.1858. 

His bother John LANCASTER 1826-1904  had emigrated to Sydney by 1870 and settled in Melbourne where he made his way as a photographer.  The large family covered the many various duties when they worked in the business.

Edward Lancaster's daughter Ada was described in the census as photographist's assistant in her father's studio.

In 1874 she  married  Fredk HADLOW 1851-1923 also  a photographer - they were my gt grandfather and gt grandmother.

I have seen a small collection of their cabinet and carte images but sadly do not have any in my personal archive.

Wow Jean!  How exciting - I wish I had a photographer in amongst my lot. 

There aren't any Lancaster photos in the ones that are up on the site at present, but I still have a couple of hundred cartes that I haven't loaded yet - including some that are still on their way from the lovely generous Jakky!  You never know, as I go through those I might find a Lancaster or two and if I do, they're yours.

Good to hear from you.  Before taking on the family history as a hobby I had very little information on the LANCASTER's.  So much was new. Much of the story came by digging in archives. But  significant leads were from those with more experience and happy to share.

The little facts were gradually pieced together to make the big picture.

I have just come across this thread and am now about to look at the photographs scanned in by Prue.  I inherited a box of photos from my grandmother and although some have a message on the back like "Love from Billy" I have no idea who most of them are either. Can I add any photos to the site Prue has done or should I start a separate one   Mine are all around the York, Leeds areas.

I am finding it difficult to get enough time to add to the site this year, but still have a hundred or more photos to scan and put up.  I also have some images donated by another Rootschatter that I have to load on to the site, and would be happy to put yours up too if you like...how many do you have?  I can PM you with details of what size/resolution to scan them at, if you want.  It would be lovely to add as many pics as possible to the site.

I think I'm going to have to re-organise it, perhaps like Roger Vaughan's site (http://www.rogerco.freeserve.co.uk/index.htm) I will have it alphabetical by photographer's name, and perhaps indexed by any surnames that are known for the sitters...

Would be happy to have others' thoughts on this please.  Might give me the shove I need to get the site going again!!

Hi Prue, and thanks for the offer, I can scan photos in though so no problem there, it would be finding how to put them onto a site so I suppose that is where you come in 

I think I have about 50 photos maybe less, I would have to count them and put them into groups (weddings, families etc.,).

I just looked at Roger Vaughan's site, and wow and wow again he has put in a lot of work on that one hasn't.  Let me know what you want me to do and I will scan the photos into the size etc you suggest.

i have never been on the Unwanted Items before,i was just passing so thought to have a look.I have been reading through all the post from the first.What i have been reading is amazing.Jakky buys something she isn't really interested,for the benefit of others what a wonderful person she is. Then she buys even more,and pays all that postage not many people would do that,if any

I'm intriqued by your Harris album. I have a small bunch of Harris cousins of Kent, and a somewhat larger bunch of Harris in Surrey. I have brothers Edward and Theodore, but don't have photos of them, don't know what they looked like, and they were born in....Finsbury and Stoke Newington, respectively...pity there aren't more names. I have some xeroxes of earlier photos of the family, and xeroxes of much earlier likenesses of the family (paintings) but I can't see if there's a relationship. maybe this is one of the "lost" branches, though I can't say for sure. pity there's so little info. many of my Harris's were Quaker, many left the faith in the Victorian era...much harder to trace that way...
