Looking for BEBB
« on: Saturday 05 November 05 11:35 GMT (UK) »
I am trying to find a Christening record for Catherine Bebb born about 1806.

The problem is I don't know where she is from as she had died before the 1851 census.  She married in Merthyr Tydfil but was not born there.  Two BEBB's in Merthyr in 1851 came from Montgomeryshire (Llanidloes area).  I notice the BEBB name is quite unusual but does seem to be predomenently from Montgomeryshire and the English border counties.

Hoping someone can help.

Hi

An IGI search in FamilySearch.org suggests a Catherine Bebb born about 1806 of Dowlais, Glamorgan and married a John Lewis in 1827.

Was there a family of Bebb's in Dowlais ?

Hi Stan,

Thanks for the response,  this is indeed the right Catherine Bebb.  The IGI is accurate in that Catherine and John Lewis married in Merthyr Tydfil but their place of birth is inaccurate.  John Lewis who was also accredited by the IGI as having been from Merthyr was actually born in Haverfordwest, Pembrokeshire.   There is no trace of any Bebbs being christened in Merthyr Tydfil so I imagine the IGI has best guessed where this couple were born based on where they were living at the time of their marriage.

I noticed that the IGI has Bebbs mainly from Montgomeryshire so wondered if anyone has the name Catherine cropping up in their Bebb families.

The only Bebb's I can find in 1851 in the whole county of Glamorgan are two families with Head of household from Montgomeryshire - both living in Merthyr Tydfil (maybe they could be brothers of Catherine?).

There is William Bebb born c1812 from Trefeglwis and Edward Bebb born c1816 from Llanidloes.  John and Catherine named two of their sons Edward and William.

Hello,
I spent some time last summer searching for ancestors in churchards in llambrynmair & Cemmaes & I can remember clearly the number of Bebbs buried there.

Try Llanbyrnmair first, about 20 miles from Llanidloes.

I have Bebbs in my tree on an adopted branch from Berriew. The name is a Mont. name so far as I know, although quite uncommon it is still in use today in the area.

Catherine Bebb, d. of Nathaniel Bebb, of Llanloddian & Elizabeth, bpt. in Llanfair Caereinion, 18 June 1807
Catherine Bebb, d. of Nathaniel Bebb, of Llanloddian & Elizabeth, bpt. in Llanfair Caereinion, 10 June 1808
William Bebb, d. of Nathaniel Bebb, of Llanloddian & Elizabeth, bpt. in Llanfair Caereinion, 31 Dec 1809

Also: Margaret, 27 Dec 1807. However there is no mention of her in Natty's will:

and the 2nd Catherine died in 1809.

William Bebb, s. of Maurice & Ann Bebb, bpt. in Trefeglwys, 23 Jul 1809
Edward Bebb, s. of Maurice & Ann Bebb, of Cottager, labourer, bpt. in Trefeglwys, 18 Apr 1813

Have you tried a wild card search and/or variations?

Hi David,

Have followed your suggestion and have revisited some searches.  I found an IGI entry for a Catherine Babb christened 3 Jun 1806 in Paignton, Devon.  This looks a good fit on dates.  Maybe she was a Babb not a Bebb, after all the names are very similar when written down.

Thank you all very much for your help, it is much appreciated.
