McGUINESS Family
« on: Saturday 05 November 05 09:04 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for information on members of the McGuinness family.
Ellen McGuinness and her sister Elizabeth came to Australia as Irish Orphans. Ellen later married Denis Sullivan and then Michael Gleeson.
The Gleesons became a prominent Wollongong family.
Elizabeth married William Kirton also  in Wollongong. The Kirtons became a prominent Wollongong family also.
Later their mother Margaret and their brother John came to Australia.
Margaret remained in Wollongong for the rest of her life. John married Sarah Griffith ( who had come to Australia as part of the Donegal Relief Fund) and they moved to Mt Murray, near Robertson NSW, where they spent the rest of their lives. John dying in 1908 and Sarah dying in 1921.
I have some information on all families, but would be interested in filling in the gaps.

Hello

John McGuinness is my g-g grandfather.  His son Griffith is my grandmother's father.  I would really like to know any info anyone might have on Stephen McGuinness whom I cant even find a birth record for - how he died etc.  The info in the below posts is useful and gives me something to start working on.  Any information on Stephen or information on John and his children would be useful.  I don't have many relatives to help me fill in the gaps on the McGuinness side of my family, so anything anyone has would be useful.  I am happy to share info on my grandmother, Kathleen, if needed.

Thanks, Allij

Hi Dundee
There were three Stephen McGuinesses. The first one was John McGuinnesses' brother who we believe died in Ireland before John and his mother came to Australia in the mid 1800s. But I've got to say that hasn't been verified. Its just that we haven't found any trace of him in Kings County where I think he was born, as the family at one stage lived in Clara.
Then there's John, who, is the  common g g grandfather of Alii and myself,  who had a son Stephen Joseph, who was born in 1864 and died in Granville in 1936 and I don't know anything else about. Then there was a third Stephen who was the son of Griffith Patrick, this makes him Alli's great uncle. This Stephen was born in 1913 and I can't quite remember when he died. I think it was sometime in the 1980s. This Tseve married and I think had four children. I vaguely knew this Steve as we lived in the same town. I need to follow up his death date.
This won't be hard to do I just haven't taken the time to do this yet.

Did you mean the first one was John's father, not brother?

As an aside, I see many people (or just one and the others have copied  ;D ) have Margaret McGUINNESS's parents as Timothy and Ellen as stated on her death reg in 1880.

Margaret states on her immigration record that she was born in Claragh and her parents were Jeremiah and Mary SULLIVAN.  Perhaps Timothy and Ellen were actually her husband's parents?

Hi Dundee
Yes, I do mean father not brother. I was writing off the top of my head, a lesson to always double check. I too am confused about Margaret's parents and like to dot my i's and cross my t's before I add to my information.I certainly did not have Timothy as the father. I'm happy to share my information so we could double check what we have.
