Aston/cemetary help please
« on: Friday 04 November 05 19:18 GMT (UK) »
Hello

I have an ancestor Thomas clements died at Garrison Street Aston 1885.

I have looked on the 1901/1902 Allen Godfrey maps but, cannot see a cemetary around the area for Garrison Street.

Does anyone know where the cemetary may have been?

Thank you

Pheobe

Perhaps Witton Cemetary, Moor Lane, which is on the Aston side of birmingham although some distance from Garrison street. It was opened in 1863.

Or Yardley cemetary, south Yardley, which might even be closer but again not that local?

Suggest call Birmingham library, local history section.

Hello Pheobe
St.Peter's & St.Paul's Aston (corner of Wharstone Lane & Icknield St.) is the nearest I can find on my 1880 map, also further down Icknield St. is what's described as the General Cemetary?but I think Witton is your best bet as most people from Aston seemed to end up there.Jim

Hello Phoebe.
The Aston area covered a large part of Birmingham in those days including Witton cemetery in Erdington.Yardley cemetery also in Birmingham came under Worcestershire,I think Witton is your best bet, I believe Birmingham central library have a name card index for burials for some cemetery's in the area but I'm not sure what date they include.
Best of luck.

Hello Solitary

Thank you for the information about the cemetary and the name cards. I shall look into it.

Pheobe.

Hi Jim

The Ashford I have is Ellen Ashford born 1846 Witton married to my GG/grandfather Edwin Bonehill born 1842 Tipton Staffs.

Ellens father was a licensed victualler in 1851 at the Boat  Tavern Witton but, I am sorry to say there does not seem to be any information about the Boat  Tavern to be found.

You're very welcome Pheobe.
Carl Chinn the Birmingham historian and author as written many books about
Birmingham, public houses being one of them, most major libraries hold copies I believe.
