Comedians ??

Hi

Whilst searching through Islington in 1861, I have been browsing the occupations too.

I have come across at least 4 comedians so far 

Was this a well paid profession?   It wasn't something I expected to find on the census. I have seen some actors, but they would be expected in London.

My grans father is down as an actor in the 1901 census and his mother on a separate sheet for 1901 took in boarders and they are down as actors-comedians. This is in Lambeth, London

I cant wait till 2012  when the next census release is due my grans mother was living at home during the 1901 count but later became a Tiller Girl playing alongside her lover for want of a better word (they never married) at the Drury Lane theatre London. What will she put?

Hi,

I don't know if it was a paid profession but I've recently purchased a victorian glass negative that features a comedian performing in a London street.  They don't look like beggars so I presume it was a street show of some sort?

I found the will of a chap who died in Hull in 1796 whose profession was "comedian", so it goes back a long way.
