They were still doing it in 1953 with 107 Rice Lane. How bad must life have been in those workhouses if it still caused embarassment in 1953.

Just adding a couple of directory entries for 107 Rice Lane:  from 1914 (Workhouse) and 1938 (Walton Hospital).

I am not at all Convinced that this Method of Recording Births and Deaths by the Registrar Office had anything whatsoever to do with Shame in any way.

Everyone else had their Birth or Death Precisely Recorded as to the Exact Address.

But if you Recorded " Hospital " you wouldn't know which side of the Road it was on,
Or how far down that long "Rice Lane" it was
Quoting the Exact Postal address is therefore more Logical and Accurate  !

We now know 107 Rice Lane = Walton Hospital
and                      56 Church Road =Tranmere and Birkenhead Infirmary
Others are          126 Smithdown Rd= Sefton General Hospital
and                       42 Belmont Rd = Newsham Hospital
and                      241 Westminster Road = Kirkdale Industrial Homes

And Best of All -  51 Balliol Road = Bootle Maternity Hospital where I was born in 1949

A Posh Victorian House and Never Ever a Workhouse!

Posh one Top Right.

Our Doctors Surgery and others were opposite in those Posh Houses.

Numbers 47 and 49 Straddled Stanley Rd going into Liverpool

For nearly 4 years 1974 to 1977 I got off the number 55 Bus on Stanley Rd  between 47 and 49 to work
at 46 St Peters House
never ever knowing  that I was born across the road at Number 51
till nearly 50 years later.

Small World !
