Hi Victoria ;D

I had a similar incident with my great grandfather's death certificate for 1943. The address where the death took place in Belfast, Northern Ireland appeared to be a private home but, after enquiries, turned out to be the Belfast City Hospital.

Maybe it's the same in your grandfather's case. Well, not the Belfast Hospital ;D but a hospital nevertheless!

Cheers
Aaron ;)

Hi Victoria,
It could be Walton Hospital, I don't know when it was built but I know it on Rice Lane in Liverpool.
Hope this helps

This post is very old, but I just saw it. 107 Rice Lane is a hospital in Liverpool.  Paul McCartney was born there.

From the early years of the 20th century, it became customary for births in workhouses (and workhouse infirmaries) to be registered with the street address of the workhouse, or a made-up address where there wasn't an actual address.  This was later extended to deaths.

I have several of these euphemistic addresses on (mainly death) certificates of people in my tree, with the informant being "the occupant" of the address, e.g.

1 Derby Road, Wesham (Fylde workhouse at Wesham, also known as the loony bin to my dad, whose grandmother it was who died there!)
32 Watling Street Rd, Fulwood (Preston workhouse)
The Lodge, Bowthorpe Rd, Norwich (Norwich workhouse)
etc

There is an (incomplete) list of these euphemistic addresses on www.workhouses.org.uk
Lancashire: Stevenson, Wild, Holden, Jepson
Worcs/Staffs: Steventon, Smith
East London & Suffolk: Guest, Scrutton
East London: Palfreman (prev Tyneside), Bissell, Collis, Dearlove, Ettridge
Herts: Camac, Collis, Mason, Dorrington, Siggens
Marylebone & Sussex: Cole
London & Huntingdonshire: Freeman
Bowland: Marsden, Noble
Shropshire: Guest

Hi
My great grandfather died in 1949 at 59 Church Road, Tranmere, Birkenhead. I found out that it was an hospital/infirmary and used to be the workhouse for Birkenhead. I was also told the reason why they just put the address was because it still carried the stigma of being a workhouse. Was Walton hospital a workhouse?
