Mary A Gates

I have a Mary A Gates shown on 1851 census as Grandaughter of John and Mary McJannett. They are living in Battersea. It says that Mary was born in Clapham Surrey c1837 I would like to find out who her parents were? Can anyone help. I know that John and Mary had at least 2 children James Hutchins McJannett and Elizabeth. James is my Gt Gt Grandfather and i dont think that Elizabeth married so was Mary A Gates illegitimate?

In batch number try both of these.
C058451   and   C058452  They both relate to Holy Trinity Clapham  and show all the  Gates folk who were christened or married at that church.

Your lady is shown as Marianne Gates, christened 5/2/1837
and she has a Mummy and Daddy
Thomas and Jane Gates

If you look on the IGI, you will find that John and Mary did indeed have a daughter Jane, but that she was indexed on the IGI under Tennett.  She was born on 3rd February 1816.

John and Mary also had the following children (All baptised in Narborough):-

Ann Jennett                         18/11/1802
William Mackqennet             30/6/1805
John Tennett                         3/7/1808
Mary Jennett                         1//7/1810
John Tennett                       1/9/2/1813
Elizabeth Jannett                  8/8/1820
James Hutchins Jannett     22/2/1823

Do not know where Mackqennet came from!!

If you look on the PRO's Site (Now the National Archives), you will find that William was in the Army.  He served in the 13th Dragoons, and was discharged aged 34, in about 1839/40.

The PRO is short for the The Public Record Office.  They are based in Kew.

They do however have a website.  Address is http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk

They have access to all the Censuses released online via www.ancestry.co.uk, although you need to pay a subscription to access this particular site.

I normally go to 'search the archives' on the National Archives site.  It brings up a list of what is available on the site.  There are the PCC Wills online, but although the initial search is free, to download a will a fee is charged.
