Dalling

Anyone come across this Surname? Matilda (Tilly) Dalling was an Englishwoman who emigrated to Nova Scotia sometime in the early 18oo's, married Duncan MacDonald and settled in Westville Nova scotia.  I apologize for the lack of info! Dalling doesn't seem to be a common name over here! Any help out there? :

I know this won't help you find Tilly's details, but I thought it may be of interest.

I've had a look at the 1851 and the name Dalling seems to be found mainly in Devon, with a few families scattered across the other southern counties: eg Surrey, Middlesex.  A few more adventurous Dallings had spread to Yorkshire and Lancashire, with just an occasional Irish and Scottish family member.  There's only 190 Dallings listed in the 1851 so it wasn't a very big family here.

You may also need to consider that the surname Dalling  can also be spelled Dallyn/Dallin/Dallen in Devon.    Good luck with your searching

Yours(s) is  the first response I've had in over 3 years of casting about!  It helps to know there is in fact some record of the "Dallings" out there...I was beginning to wonder if the'yd dropped from the sky!! You can appreciate that if there are only a few families over there...there are even fewer here!   Then again, it does narrow the search somewhat.."Tilly Dalling" is such a great name!

I have the exact opposite happening with my MacDonald families...there are just too many of them...all with children named Margaret or Angus, and all from the same area.!

Tilly married a Duncan MacDonald,  They were Protestant, and relatively well-do landowners in Westville, Nova Scotia. circa 1840.   She became the "matriarch" of the MacDonald/Walters family there.  I love her name..."Tilly Dalling"...just rolls off the tongue!

What Scottish connections are you referring to???  I'm presuming she was pretty adventurous!  You'd have to to end up in a rough little coa-mining town in the wilderness in the 1800's!

What a woman Tilly must have been!  I do hope you're able to make some progress finding her history.   

This is the 1851 census information.

This pair living in Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire.
John Dalling, Head, U, 21, Travelling Draper, b. Scotland.
Isabella Dalling, Sister, U, 23, Housekeeper, b. Scotland.
HO197/2363, folio 863, p 27.

Living in Nottingham St Mary, Nottinghamshire.
William Dalling, Head, M, 40, Cordwainer, b. Scotland.
Wife and children born in Nottingham.
HO107/2132, folio 116, p 22.

There’s another family with the children born in Scotland but the father was Irish.

Of course this only gives you Dallings born in Scotland who were living in England in 1851.  If you post on the Scotland board someone with access to that census will be able to tell you how many Dallings there were in Scotland.

Mind you, don't ignore the Devon connection.  Because of the seafaring tradition, some people from that area were great travellers.
