1851 census look up for Charles Artis
« on: Monday 31 October 05 16:37 GMT (UK) »
Could SKS look on the 1851 census in the Middlesex area for the following person:

Information from the 1881 census:

Charles D. Artis     age 69   born  London Marlebone Middlesex
Anthony                       40   son   born  St. Geo. Hanover sq.
Mary Dumas                 37   dau                         :

Charles is sometimes listed as Charlie.  I think his wife name maybe Mary Ann.  All though on the 1881 census Charles is listed as Married Can't find his wife anywhere.

Charles' occupation is Poulterer.

Thank you very much.

Regards
Anne

more information on the Artis family in Knightsbridge
« Reply #4 on: Friday 11 May 07 20:17 BST (UK) »
Hi

I found this topic via a Google search for Charles Dillon Artis, and found it very useful, so here are some more details for anyone else researching this family:

 - I've now got Matilda Artis' birth certificate from 1852 (not in any of the above censuses, as she'd married Alfred Scruby by 1871, but I imagine she was in the 1861 census), daughter of Charles, and of Anne Artis formerly Jones

 - of Motcombe Street (which still exists)

- Charles and Anne's marriage is indexed: Dec 1838 St. Geo. Hanover Sq.  vol1 p23

 - I suspect Anne had died by 1881 - the rest of the LDS transcription looks hasty (has transposed letters in 'Anniutant', 'Doemstic Servant'), and probably 'M' was transcribed at some point instead of 'W'. freeBMD.org.uk has Deaths Sep 1875
ARTIS  Anne  61  St. Geo. H. Sq  1a 232
which tallies with an 1814 birth from the census entries

- other children also in freeBMD.org.uk

- there are records of the poulterer business (filed in a2a under corporate, not personal) in the City of Westminster Archives Centre
Record Reference Acc 2406
in 1853-82: records
3. GB/NNAF/B33927
Anthony Artis, poulterer, Westminster
Westminster, Middlesex

I'd welcome any further information on this family or the Joneses in Whitford.

Katherine

Just joined rootschat and so my reply may be a bit late as the email correspondence seems to be 3 years old.  Anyway I am Michael Artis and my greatgreatgrandfather was Charles Dillon Artis of 16 Motcomb St, Belgravia, London.  My own father (also Charles Dillon) thoroughly researched the Artis Tree up to his death in 1994 and I have just recently started to further progress his researches.  If there is still any information that you require please advise.  I know that there is a link to Canada through CDAs daughter Mary Dumas nee Artis who, I believe, died 24 Jul 1932 in Canada.  She took a daughter, Elizabeth Matilda, out to Canada with her.

Very Best Wishes

Michael Artis

Hello Michael:
What a nice surprise to hear from you.. I am not related to the Artis family but my good friend is. I am helping her with her research.. She will be thrilled to hear about you. I am going to phone her soon as I send this message.

She is the related to Elizathbeth Matilda.  We have been looking of years to find anyone related to Charles d. Artis.  I found Charles' will on a trip to Salt Lake city.

Once I talk to my friend Marj I will send you a p.m. message.

Cheers
Anne

You may be interested on an item for sale on Ebay - it's a receipt from Artis, Poulterer of Motcomb St.

If you use the search terms - receipt poulterer motcomb - it will be listed.
